Car's in for its first service and one of the things I asked to be checked was my broken cupholders - the spring loaded prongs (in both front cupholders) have disappeared into their holes. Some could be prised out but not all.

The initial view from the dealer is that it's not a warranty claim - something too big for the holder has forced the prongs.

I noted I fail to see how that's possible - the hole of the cupholder can only take a bottle of a max diameter and the prongs should be able to contend with that, otherwise what's the point?

They're going to escalate up to Porsche GB, but in the meantime, has anyone else had the same happen?

This happened to me 3 months into owning it. I just left it there since I can’t be bothered prying it out and don’t want to deal with the dealer arguing about it. I agree it should be a warranty claim since you can’t jam anything in wider than the diameter of the hole.

Thanks guys.

I found the replacement video doing a bit of a search on here (thanks for noting it). Seems easy enough...and I can get a brand new replacement part for £76 (the prongs themselves actually detach, but it doesn't look like you can buy those individually)...it's not really the point though. The design seems flawed if it allows this failure mode.

The loaner I have (911 - will post thoughts on that at the weekend) has a different design of "prong" that makes it impossible for this to happen. I'm surprised they redesign little details like this. I guess the prongs must cost 15p to make on a 911 versus 5p on a Taycan :)

Also make sure you are using an official Porsche tumbler, as those are the only ones recommended for use in your cup holders :giggle:

Hate dealers who argue with you in the first year of ownership over something that would cost them less than 100 to fix. They should take your word that it is a defect and not something you did. I hade a similar issue on a BMW ix. With a heating vent adjustment tab. It came off and dealer said the whole vent needed to be replaced to fix it and the cost would be 450 dollars as it was not covered by warranty. I pushed back and they agreed to fix it as a courtesy at no charge.

To be fair to them, I didn't buy from this dealer and the car's two years old (still in warranty of course). They also fixed my cracked pano roof before Christmas, so I don't have this at their door. And it's not a critical function.

We'll see if the escalation bears fruit. Fundamentally the product shouldn't do this. It cannot do this in a 911 due to the design so why in a Taycan? (Rhetorical ?).

Thanks for the clarification - your facts don’t lend themselves to replacement as a courtesy. Best of luck in resolving it. It’s least it’s not to much if it ends up being your expense.

But his facts do lend to replacement under warranty as the item failed under normal usage conditions.
I think what is being referred to is where things end up borderline (I don't think this should be, but others might), good will won't apply (broadly fair enough).

And I also didn't use Porsche cups and Porsche water in them, so Porsche may have an arguable case, even though my tyres are NF0 rated ?

Will up date as it goes....

This happened to me with one of my tabs early in my ownership as well. I actually forgot about it and tbh haven't noticed any reduced functionality. That being said I rarely put skinny bottles in there, which is where I assume the grabbing nature of the tabs would come in handy. Most standard cups/bottles fill the cupholder pretty well. I suppose the fact that I still have 3 out of 4 functioning helps as well.

Uh oh… but was Porsche branded air, Porsche’air (pronounced Por-shar), used to fill those NF0 tyres? And if so, were adequate measures taken to ensure that the non-approved plebian air from the atmosphere didn’t seep in to reduce the effectiveness of the Porsche‘air?

Well, it happened to me today. Couldn’t understand where it went, so I opened up the console cover to look for the finger. Nope, it’s not there or somewhere deeper within the console. I’m not going to disassemble the whole thing though to look for that tiny part.

So I searched on eBay and found someone who was selling the plastic inside part of the cupholder with three fingers left (just like mine) for $30. I don’t want to take the car to the dealership for this because they’ll keep the car for a week. I also have MapEV on the car, so I rather not remove it just for this.

One thing I will say is that these cupholders are super noisy when using a Yeti tumbler. You hear the springs all the time as the car moves around.

I didn't look specifically, but am not sure there's anywhere for it to go once it's popped off. Mine have always been resting under the cupholder and easy to see (the final two in the front holder broke off last week, now fixed).

I'd recommend putting glue on all of them to lessen the risk of it happening again.

As for the noise, maybe add a small amount of silicon spray to the spring bit and outside of the prong.

I suspect this happens with metal water bottles when full and put in at an angle. Still a crap design though.

I have a Yeti tumbler I use often full of water and I’ve noticed they’re noisy but haven’t seen a spring fail yet. Of course, now that I’ve said it I’m sure it’ll happen to me.

I have noticed that the cup holder doesn’t grasp things in there as good as other vehicles, and items that don’t fit the holder entirely seem to lean or vibrate a lot. Either that or this car is super quiet that you notice the tiniest noises immediately when they surface.
