I got feedback from Porsche today. The sound is from the inverter. The frequency of the sound is that way it's supposed to sound with the current software. It could change in the future but not something Porsche will do anything with at the current time.
@GreenHornet can you ask your Porsche why some make the noise and other's don't? Would they be willing to change the inverter.

I did ask about that. They said this was due to software?‍♂

But I will ask again. But going on vacation for a month now. Will push a bit more on this when I am back. This was not what I bought...

Porsche Reading have now confirmed the noise is from the motors and not brakes. They told me the noise is within tolerance. I have asked them to define this. There is no way I am accepting this. No other electric car makes this sound. They expect me to accept some Taycan’s do and others don’t. What a joke from a company that prides itself on engineering. I’m not letting this go as I believe I’m right.

Interesting. I have a rwd ST from December 22. It’s has a definite low speed whine certainly from transmission or motor. It’s similar to a worn differential. It doesn’t seem right to me. I’m going to raise the issue and will let you know the response.

My car makes the same noises. It’s slightly annoying with the windows down. Almost like a dog whistle. It’s good to know nothing is wrong my car (‘23 GTS) but annoying to know it was designed that way. Very interesting that some cars don’t make that noise though. Maybe it’s because the GTS has the same motors/inverters as the turbo? I wonder if this sound occurs in the 4S and base models.
I have RWD ST and it makes the same noise. Like a worn differential - it does not sound right to me.

So an update all. After Porsche saying it was the PSCB (brakes) which I refuted, they have now confirmed that the noise is from the motors and is within "tolerance". Hence, they stated they will not change the motors. Unbelievable!

I have driven several different electric cars for over 6 years and none have ever made such a sound from their motors. Really disappointed in Porsche.

I will most likely have some more meetings with them soon. If a satisfactory conclusion is not achieved, I will likely take these legal and just get rid of the car.

I can't believe Porsche would do such a thing given their pride in engineering.

Is there anyway of doing a survey on this Forum to see how many others suffer from this issue?

I have gotten a written reply from my local Porsche dealer with the text Porsche AG has given them. I just want to get a confirmation that it is OK to post it.

But they still clame that it is the inverter, not motor or brakes.

Thanks for the update and how very annoying. There is no way this should be within tolerance. Mine's getting worse by the day. I don't suppose you have any more technical level detail you could share with us so that when I take mine in to the Guildford OPC I can give them the details of exactly what you have found out from the Reading team and then make it more of an issue they need to fix? Thank you.
Basically, they put the car on a roller/ramp and let it run. They were under the car whilst it was running, removed the bottom cover plate and isolated the sound to front and rear motors. The rest is rubbish and I don't believe this 'tolerance' aspect, whilst I believe the majority of Taycans make no noise what-so-ever.

Does anyone know how to start a poll / vote to ascertain the extent of this issue amongst members of the forum?

IIRC inverters are mounted directly on the motors, so some people may call them the same thing.

Being RWD mine only has one motor. I’m fairly sure this comes from the motor, a bearing or a gear whine. The noise is not evident when coasting. However at low speed (under 30mph) power on and power off (regen?) then the high pitched whine appears. I can live with the sound I think providing it doesn’t get worse and I can imagine others might not object to electric motor whine however my concern is that this must be a symptom of a part out of tolerance or inaccurate installation that will eventually give rise to major mechanical problems.

The whining sound Im getting is when Im coasting at low speeds (20 mph and under), straight line, and turning at low speeds.

Had to re-watch videos multiple times to get that sound/noise/squeak. I must admin doesn't bother me at all :whew:

It happens when driving at low speeds under light acceleration or light regen braking between speeds of 15-35kmph.
It is interesting that the noise only occurs in the speed range where the pedestrian warning sound is active (up to about 30 kph / 19 mph; citation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_vehicle_warning_sounds).

Hypothesis: some failure or mis-install of EMI filtering/shielding is permitting inverter EM/RF noise to affect the pedestrian warning noise generator.

Method to test hypothesis: remove power to the pedestrian noise generator (pull fuse or disconnect power harness) and see if the high pitch noise goes away. Restore power to the pedestrian noise generator and confirm that it is functioning when coasting at low speed, but without the high pitch noise.

Unfortunately I’m not technicality sound to do that, I’d be happy to know the results of your experiment

I agree with you that it’s hard to notice it if you don’t know what you are listening out for. But once you hear the squeal it’s hard to unhear it :headbang:
