A recent story in the NY Times indicated that many auto manufacturers are selling vehicle driving data to intermediaries, which then sell that information to insurance carriers. What sort of information? Instances of speeding, quick acceleration and hard braking. Some automobile owners are now facing sharp increases in coverage costs. (This is likely a US-based issue since European countries have much stricter laws around data privacy.)
Several auto makers were named in the article, but I can’t find any information on whether Porsche is taking part in this scheme. I did find, according to vehicleprivacyreport, that the Taycan is a “smartphone on wheels”, which is not a revelation to any of us.
Anyone here know if Porsche is selling us out? I’m asking out of curiosity and because my insurance rates skyrocketed recently, and I have no claims or moving violations on my record. I’m wondering if we’re being surveilled for profit.
