A recent story in the NY Times indicated that many auto manufacturers are selling vehicle driving data to intermediaries, which then sell that information to insurance carriers. What sort of information? Instances of speeding, quick acceleration and hard braking. Some automobile owners are now facing sharp increases in coverage costs. (This is likely a US-based issue since European countries have much stricter laws around data privacy.)

Several auto makers were named in the article, but I can’t find any information on whether Porsche is taking part in this scheme. I did find, according to vehicleprivacyreport, that the Taycan is a “smartphone on wheels”, which is not a revelation to any of us.

Anyone here know if Porsche is selling us out? I’m asking out of curiosity and because my insurance rates skyrocketed recently, and I have no claims or moving violations on my record. I’m wondering if we’re being surveilled for profit.

Let’s just enjoy cars with the limited amount of privacy they have left while we can. Even though you may be physically driving the car a little bit longer in the future, expect a complete dossier on your habits. Everything from camera capture /audio recording to insurance surveillance.

All a man can do at that point is head out into his garage and get behind the wheel of anything pre-2020.

Latest carplay integration also shows your max speed and max Gs. So this means CarPlay stores:

1. Maximum speed per trip
2. Coordinates of said trip
3. Time stamps
4. Your apple ID which is tied to you

Digging into OP's link, CarPlay shares the following:

Meaning that at some point in the future a local police department may bulk issue warrants to Apple on an annual/monthly/whatever cadence and auto-send speeding tickets to people.

Digging deeper, Taycans are equipped with two way Sirius XM telematics. Meaning not only does the vehicle receive information, it sends it back to Sirius. Looking into the data they collect, this includes things like the number of passengers present (based on seat sensors). Holy shit

I did more digging here: https://www.insideradio.com/free/si...cle_7d4f6b54-a8b5-11eb-a658-ef66017167a0.html

“Remember that SiriusXM in-vehicle is no longer purely based on a one-way network,” CEO Jennifer Witz said during a conference call with analysts on Wednesday. “It's tremendously exciting to have this growing collection of data at our fingertips, and this data set will grow dramatically over the next few years as 360L becomes the default SiriusXM platform in vehicle.”

With the interactive receivers now in close to 2 million vehicles, the data showed driving and commuting climbed to 90% of pre-COVID levels in recent weeks, “a positive sign that people are getting back to normal life,” Witz said.

Oh, if I told you what kind of "anonymized" data you can buy legally from data brokers in the US... and how it can be reverse-engineered and you can be identified.

Yeah a lot of these disclaimers are quiet about sharing with data brokers. I assume if there's no explicit disclosure saying they don't share the data, then by default they do. It's frustrating this is all opt-out and complete trudgery to get through.

Glad I decided not to use CarPlay now - though this wasn't the reason!

Regardless of the answer to the data selling question, I know for a fact that one reason why insurance cost has gone up is the unexpectedly high incident rate / repair cost. Especially the repair cost. For example the battery repairs and replacements are very expensive.

There was articles in the news about this in Finland. The situation is so bad that full coverage isn't given at all to Taycan's/E-tron GT's *specifically* by one major insurance company.

As far as I know, the rest of the companies still give full coverage. But this is undoubtedly one reason for increased cost. The insurance companies have a lot more incident & cost data now that the car has been in sale for 4+ years.

Even though many of us (like me) have had a fairly incident free life with the Taycan, when things break down it apparently costs a fortune to fix.

There’s a trend among insurers to total EV’s rather than repair them because it’s the optimal way to avoid excess rental fees and increased parts and labor costs. Not to mention the liability created for the insurer if a faulty repair turns into a BBQ’d EV. Write a check and go onto the next file. Those loss costs are baked into your rate increase (mine went up 22% a month ago with no rickets/accidents).

The real question IMO is whether they sell our speed, acceleration and cornering data.
Perhaps location data too. If they do, then there needs to be a very clear way to opt out or all performance drivers will have to go back to older cars without that capability.

How do we find out what Porsche currently sells to insurance companies?
