My '22 Taycan GTS was afflicted with the "red ring of death" in December and I posted about it here. I suffered the indignities of a base Macan, followed by the worst-of-both-worlds Cayenne e-Hybrid, posting about it here. But earlier this week I got the call that my battery was fixed and I'm back on the road. Yeah!

The dealer diagnosed and replaced 6 of the high voltage battery cells, all covered under warranty. My service tech let me look at the full invoice and the total cost billed to PCNA was over $50k! They also did the regular "check for and address any recalls" and "complimentary 2193 point inspection."

Because all posts are better with pictures, here are two. Wishing all those who celebrate a happy Passover and a happy Easter. :)
Porsche Taycan My Taycan is back! P2
Porsche Taycan My Taycan is back! E2

PS: I'm kidding when I say "indignities," and recognize that complaining about any Porsche loaner car is a first world problem of the highest order. 🙏

Good data to some who have been claiming on the forum how battery and module replacements are not very expensive, when I was quoting the quote of my dealer that battery replacement cost is $87k. This sure takes the cake for the battery module replacement. The second place was out of warranty battery replacement with protective plate, refurb mind you, that was $45k.

This also puts battery warranty in perspective when the 8 year and 100k mile expire on how to handle the cost of any issues, modules, or entire battery.

50K sounds excessive. Not saying that it’s not accurate but there must be some upcharging on their end. It’s good you got your car back and now you don’t have to worry about rising gas prices anymore!

It's really going to hurt when some unfortunate discovers in Year 9 that their $1xx,xxx investment 9 years ago is living on borrowed time: if the batteries fail the car is essentially totaled ... not worth fixing.

I've read that the average cost of driving a new or nearly new model is about $10K annually. I don't know if that number was supposed to include fuel and insurance or if just represented depreciation I.E.: You buy (not lease -- even more expensive) a $50,000 Honda in 2026 ... how much is it worth in 2031 if it has 50,000 miles? $10K? That's about $8K/year.

My point is that a base Taycan after 8-10 years is getting into that $10K annual cost range. The problem comes in if you paid $170K or $225K or more and your car is worth not much after 8 years due to risk of out of warranty battery failure.

Anyway, if EVs have an effective life of 10 years as to resale value, that's a real downside to owning one. The correct solution would be dramatically reducing the cost of battery repair / replacement. That is a very viable solution but requires designing the car battery and underside for easy repair / replacement rather than the gotcha replacement numbers being quoted by Porsche.

In the Netherlands there are insurance companies that have an extended insurance for the battery pack. Whether it’s broken or <70% and not under warranty anymore. Very interesting! It costs about €25 a month but that is worthwhile considering the cost of replacement!

Not really; as most people would not be repairing or replacing modules at porsche when out of warranty;

and the cost is half or less when not doing it at porsche.

I can source modules in CH for 2.5k a piece, and that’s considered a premium price. Refurbished modules can be found for even less

At least NN has it. Good conditions otherwise as well. Probably some other companies also have it.
I’m putting my insurance there already and add the module before hittjng 8 years too. Just make sure that you can prove no existing batteryproblems, thats a condition they have

EDIT.
turns out my taycans newvalue was €5000 to high… it’s maxed to €125.000 at the moment

Not sure how you can prove non-existent issues, but that is a problem for them. Thanks for the tip!

Glad you're back, Watchaburger.
Three months!! 50K for a PARTIAL replacement??
Yep, that's what I saw. Now, who knows if that's an inflated price for PCNA, or if it's the same as what a normal person would pay for an out of warranty fix. But at that price, you're getting close to the market value for older Taycans. Glad the battery warranty is 8 years.

What the dealers charge for warranty repairs does not equal payment from the OEM. If I had to guess, it would be that these charges are billed at full retail cost. Why, so the battery manufacturer gets hosed.
