During the Developers Conference this past week, Apple provided more details around their new CarPlay. They focused on how customizable the interface is, which has been recurring complaint.

Porsche was announced to be one of the firsts to embrace it, although no word on which model.
Curious to see if that will pan out, and whether other brands will give it a go as well.

Would be cool, but taycan cruved screen behind wheel is not connected to pcm, so apple carplay there won't ever happen

All i want is for apple maps to precondition the battery...
What does precondition mean?

That’s my main hope as well!

Do you know if that lack of connections is just on the J1 platform or PPE as well?

Battery gets to the right temperature before arriving to the charging station, so the charging is faster/more efficient.

It currently only works if you’re using the internal navigation app, not 3rd party like Apple or Google Maps.

That is not entirely true. The map in the driver display – for example – is streamed from the PCM. It is just a simple "dumb" redisplay of content from the PCM. This keeps the "driver computer" software simpler without having to reimplement the map display functionality there.

So I’ve been in touch with Porsche Switzerland since Carplay 2.0 was a decisive factor for me to go for Porsche or not and here is what they told me:
  • The talks with Apple and development of CarPlay 2.0 is still ongoing and they have no news to share whether or when this will arrive to which model. (a dealer told me it should be possible to upgrade later once it’s available, but I believe this is non-substantiated speculation)
  • However, they also told me that there’s going to be an upgrade to the existing CarPlay which entails an extension of Apple Maps (and maybe other apps) into the instrument cluster. There’s actually a screenshot on the Macan website that illustrates how that will look like (see below). To me, that would already be a substantial upgrade to the existing CarPlay and that’s why I went for Porsche in the end (also since they seem generally quite on top of the possibilities that Apple offers regarding CarPlay integration). It will be available for the Taycan.

If you went Porsche because of software upgradability like this, you backed the wrong horse I'm afraid.

I went for the Taycan for many reasons (and the only alternative would have been waiting until more is known about CarPlay 2.0). Porsche and Aston Martin are so far the only companies that have announced to support it with cars launching this year - hence I took the risk and ordered the Taycan. I am very well aware that there might not be a future upgrade possibility, but as it stands today no car in the market is more likely to receive it in the foreseeable future either. And lastly, my current Audi is up for replacement now - and not later. And last but not least, the worst case would be that I "only" get the Apple Maps extension into the instrument cluster - which is ok to me as well.

If you bought a Taycan because you think there will be future updates like that coming, I am afraid you are in for some surprise.

Just to let you know, the feature that is described for the new all dong snd dab]nice Macan, has been working for BMW i4 for a long time. Nothing new there. The CarPlay integration in the BMW is lightyears ahead of the Trascan

So what? BMW i4 is not on my list. It was Audi e-tron GT vs. Taycan. And between those two Porsche seems ahead regarding CarPlay (and CarPlay 2.0)

I do get that you guys want to express your frustration about Porsche's software upgrading history, but nothing you're telling me here would have changed my purchase decision. Therefore we can just leave it here and return to the discussion about Carplay 2.0.
