New PCM problem…

The PCM will now only show the word “Porsche”.

it happened about 12 noon on January 1st. Almost like they pushed a new faulty software update. I’ve reset it twice and it doesn’t go away.

When the collision warning activates it switches to the proper screen, but when it goes off it’s back to just the Porsche word.

ive noticed if I keep the collision warning sign up I can work the PCM like normal except the airplay won’t start. Music is still playing in the car, but the airplay screen won’t come up.

Also, the phone app will not work. It just says “charging error”, but it charges just fine.

Maybe if I tape over one of the collision sensors, and turn off the audio alarm I can use the PCM while driving….

Any ideas?

It sounds like Porsche techs are misdiagnosing the problem. I bet it’s not the PCM that’s at fault, but whatever security module is sending out the signal that the car has a key inside (or is unlocked, ready to use). Maybe during a software update some security module did not update its software and is now mismatched with the PCM software, or some security provisioning-pairing got messed up, which could cause the PCM and security module to not be able to understand each others messages. Or maybe it’s a wiring issue with some bus having a bad/bent ground pin causing noise on the bus and therefore lost messages.

That’s about the exact time mine happened. It was fine when I went into church at 10:45am ET and this when I came out at 12:15pm ET.
When Tesla makes mistakes like this I usually see a new software upload the next day with a patch to fix the problem. We’ll see how fast Porsche is….

If all the cars are showing it about the same time, this could be an expired certificate of some sort, likely used to authenticate communications with a security module to let the PCM know the correct key is in the car.

Certificate expiry happens even amongst seasoned internet companies like Microsoft, so not at all unlikely that Porsche operations would screw that up - they don't even have two factor authentication for their Porsche account yet.

If many cars are reporting similar thing happening on same date, one experiment to try would be to go somewhere where there is no cellular coverage, trigger the proximity warning to enable the PCM just long enough to change the date to some time last year (when it used to work). If that unlocks the PCM (until its clock is reset when back in cellular/GPS range), that would tell us Porsche forgot to update some certificate in the car, which recently expired.

I had a similar problem (tracking in https://github.com/evstatus/PorscheTaycan/issues/3). One thing I'm curious to collect some data on is, for those affected, have you enabled CarPlay and was your phone connected to the car when the crash happened?

It happened to me when I had CarPlay set up, and the 12V disconnect + reboot fixed it (though keep an eye out for https://github.com/evstatus/PorscheTaycan/issues/5 after that). I since have not re-enabled CarPlay and the PCM's been perfect.

For those on this thread affected by this, if you can share whether or not you had CarPlay enabled + a device connected, I'll catalog that data in https://github.com/evstatus/PorscheTaycan/issues/3.

I have this happen randomly from time to time and have posted another thread on it. It seems to be the screen that doesn’t show what is going on as shortcut keys can change the radio stations and although pressing the key to get you to show the map does nothing, the screen is then showing the map when you start up next time. Pretty annoying if you are going somewhere

Mine is working again this morning as of 08.00 am uk time. PIRM / charge planner not working but I'll try the two finger reboot when I have time.

Edit.... PIRM and charge planner came back to life when I went back to the car around 2pm this afernoon .

Mine started actually on the 31 at around 5pm, it was probably already Jan 1 in germany, I was able to use carplay while connected.

Both screens were just loading, porsche and taycan on the passenger screen.

I started reading online about PCM restart so i tried the 2 fingers method twice, nothing happened.

they did the fuse pull for 3 min. When I put the fuse back looked the same so I was super angry and almost did not took the taycan out, but my wife's car was inside the garage and mine blocking so we said, ok lets go on the taycan.

well, we all got in the car and both screens turned on like nothing happened.

so I am not sure if porsche figured something out and fixed the issue and all screens are back working again.

So far no other issues to report. I am waiting for an appointment for my second delivery and they will likely check all.

Mine has been doing this randomly since new. Car was delivered in June and has been running the latest software (PCM) since new. The uPdate upgraded a few other modules, but not the PCM as it was already running the latest.

I’m pretty disappointed in the lack of updates. The current PCM software is date coded 2/15/2022, and while everyone was very excited about the new uPdate, the PCM software is quite old with no updates since February.

I’m also disappointed with the lack of updates from Porsche. They have plenty of bugs to squish and the uPdate supposedly prepared the PCM for a real OTA update process. What’s the point if you never use it? I’m not surprised though given how bad Porsche seems to be at software overall. To be fair, most of the traditional car makers seem to be at varying levels of “poor” when it comes to software.
