I'll be purchasing a gently pre-owned 2020 4S on Monday. I don't have a home charger and won't for a while. We currently live in a condo that does not have this infrastructure. I'll be living off the land, so to speak. I've followed quite a few threads and watched several videos on how to use Electrify America to charge but I'm still confused. I have a few questions.

1. Do I need both the My Porsche and the Porsche Connect App?
2. Do I need the NA app? From videos, it looks like I find charging and start charging from the My Porsche app.
3. I'm buying pre-owned at a non-Porsche dealership (gasp! still 2 years left on warranty). Do you think my local Porsche dealership would be kind enough to give me a demo on how to use these apps to charge the car?

Any other thoughts/instructions/videos/threads are welcome!

I’ll let someone with a 2020 help you out, but there are several quality tutorials on YouTube regarding Electrify America and some other charging companies (Chargepoint, etc).

1. Yes. You will need MyPorsche app for everyday use, including charging a 2020 at EA with the Porsche charging service. You will likely need the Porsche Connect app to register for Connect services like the Porsche Charging Service.
2. No. The videos which show using the Porsche NA app are old. You now use MyPorsche app to charge.
3. You need to get yourself a MyPorsche ID. Best way to do this is to use a desktop/laptop computer and register yourself (get your myporsche ID) at porsche.com.

Once you have a MyPorsche ID, the dealer? - not sure in the case of non-Porsche dealership - needs to inform Porsche NA that you own the car. Porsche NA will then assign the car to your MyPorsche ID. Once the car is assigned to you, when you open your MyPorsche app (or the MyPorsche website on your desktop/laptop), you will be able to click on the vehicle and see your car.

A followup step will be for you to sign up for Porsche Charging Service (on the Connect app). You will need to enter a credit card for that, even if you are eligible for the free 30 minutes of charging.

The above registrations/signups must occur prior to you being able to use Porsche Charging Service and the app to charge your car.
You have the option to separately to pay directly for charging with EA account or some other charging service's payment method.

A related point. When you get your car, and preferably prior to driving away with it at the dealer, you want to ensure that the SOS light above the rear-view mirror is green. That means that the emergency call function is operational and the car is communicating with Porsche. If red, the car may have a datacomm problem that you ought to get fixed before you accept the car.

You are buying the car from a dealer. Make the dealer get info from a local Porsche dealer before you accept car. Make the dealer ensure Porsche NA has assigned the car to your PorscheID.

Once the above items are completed see this post in a different thread for steps to use the app to charge car at EA fast charger.

I blew my wall charger a month ago and had to live off the fat of the land in my 2021 until I could get an electrician out to install a new circuit. No EA's/Porsche dealers close to home/work which was a bit problematic. Best short term solution was to visit EV-friendly non-Porsche dealerships with free charging. The best was a local MB dealership with a 65 kW Chargepoint charger offering 30 minutes of free charging, which gave me plenty of time to scarf up free MB coffee and snacks, answer some e-mails and check out the new metal in the showroom. Less preferable, but still effective, were local VW dealerships. They all seem to have free charging (lower kWs) but no free coffee and snacks for Taycan-driving bums (and nothing too interesting in their showrooms). Best of all, my local VW dealer's free charger is not listed on Plugshare so it was always available to me 24/7. Once you find chargers (especially free chargers) do not spread the word on Plugshare or you could lose easy access.

I've watched many of those, but still have questions. I'm usually a "have to do it myself" person to fully get it. So might need to make an appointment with local dealership.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more assistance…with our 2022, I just needed to apply my AMEX to my EA account in case of any sessions that exceed 30 minutes. I just pull up, plug, charge and go. 2020s are different. Good luck!

Thanks! This is really helpful! I should have said, I do have a "My Porsche" ID. We've had several P cars. From what I can tell, once I purchase the car, I can add it to my "garage" on the My Porsche app. To do this, I send the VIN, proof of purchase, and a picture of my photo ID through the app. I assume this is how Porsche NA gets the info to link the car to My Porsche account.

I assume, once the Taycan shows up in My Porsche, it will also show up in Porsche Connect, because I see no place there to add a car. I also assume, once the Taycan shows up in Porsche Connect, I will then see the option to sign up for the Porsche Charging service.

Once you have the car as a vehicle you can select from your PorscheID, as I remember you will have to set a 4 digit code/password in MyPorsche, then log your ID into the car. And yes, connect will then work.

If you have not done so, look at the posts in the forum for checklists to use when picking up your car. One is a sticky in the delivery subforum. There is another good one that was shared here later.
For pre-owned you want to ensure you get what should be with the car, including the PMC+, with its cables, manuals, key fobs, etc.

Another point. Besides the SOS light being green, your Taycan needs to have working cellular data link. In upper right corner of PCM, you should see LTE symbol if car has cellular data. If LTE symbol is not lit, then connection with Porsche servers on internet will not be possible.

Once you have car and are enjoying it, read posts in here about "road warrior kit" for road-tripping your Taycan.

Hi, I have a 2020 model and went through this. First, i would get the Chargepoint, ElectrifyAmerica, and EvGO apps and register there. This way you can charge at most locations (but you need to pay ;-) ). If you can find a per minute 150kw, or 350kw charger, that can be quite cheap.. for me in WA with EvGO that works out to only $0.09 per kwh if charging at 150kw.

Anyway, if you still have time left on the free EA charging, you can use That through the MyPorsche app as soon as your Porsche ID is linked to your car in the website, and once you register a credit card with the charging service on the MyPorsche website. (The card wont be charged but is needed)

To activate the charger you need to 1. Plug in, and 2. Go to the map in The MyPorsche app, select the charger icon, then select the EA charger where you are on the map, then select the CCS plug, and then select the right number that correspond to the actual station you are at (it is written on the plug station). Click start charging and wait a bit and the charge should happen.. sometimes i need to try to this again if i was too slow... and sometimes try another station ... but i always got it to work after a few tries.

When done charging, just press the button next to the plug once, wait a few seconds for the light to go off, and then you can unplug it.

Enjoy! :)

I just bought a 2020 also. The key is to get the car registered in your name and showing up in the my Porsche app. I bought through a Porsche dealer so they did it on the back end, but you could also go through the “add a vehicle” steps with Porsche.

if you go to -“Account” and then “Charging Service” Mine showed on the “Contracts” tab my vin, that the contract was valid, the contract dates, and a contract ID number as soon as the car was registered to me by Porsche for the final year of free charging. No interaction with the old app was necessary.

once that’s live and active you can register credit card and charge away. As others have said, you now only use the my Porsche app to charge.

One note, if found it works better to enable the charger through the app before plugging in (in fact that’s in the instructions). Sometimes when you plug first the electrify America payment process seems to get in the way of the Porsche authorizations. Lots of “couldn’t connect to billing server” errors.

as above, find the charger on the map on the my Porsche app, click on the plug type, the pedestal ID, and start charging.

I’m in the same situations as you. Home EVSE won’t be in till next week so I’ve been seeing EA stations fairly frequently. Luckily there’s a 150kw 6 blocks from our house.

Are you sure?
I thought that 2020 could be upgraded, so plug&charge could work for them.

New hardware was added in MY 2021 to enable plug and charge. I looked into this before moving forward with a 2020 CPO purchase, and there wasn’t a viable path available to retrofit P&C to a ‘20. Didn’t matter to us as we’ll mainly be charging at home.

Pcarwhisperer recently published a good video for charging the Taycan on Electrify America. It’s up to date relative to present day best practices. Watch this and ignore the plug and charge bits given your MY20.
