Porsche’s new software can analyse data using AI to notify drivers of upcoming battery faults

Yes you read that right. New tech has been developed using artificial intelligence (AI) meaning your car can detect a fault before it even occurs, giving the driver a nudge to take it to the garage in order to get it checked out before something serious develops.

The latest Porsche Macan benefits from new software called ‘AI Preventative Anomaly Detection’ which essentially sends real-time car diagnostics data to the cloud. This is then analysed by artificial intelligence to pick out anomalies in the battery system, which could potentially lead to a problem developing down the line.

Irregularities can be pinpointed to individual cells of the battery, with shifts in capacity or a change in the balancing characteristics potentially pointing to a looming issue.

Once the data has been scrutinised and if a potential problem is suspected, the owner will be notified on their ‘My Porsche’ app, and advised to take their car in to be inspected in their local Porsche centre.

Speaking to Auto Express, Porsche’s head of data-driven quality, Nora Lobenstein, explained how this type of technology could become revolutionary because “up until now, [manufacturers] have been reactionary to problems. With this preventative concept, we can detect a problem, even if for the customer it’s not possible.”

“It’s really interesting what we learn from all of this,” Lobenstein continued, “especially in how high-voltage cells and battery systems behave. It’s not something that we could monitor before.”

AI means your car can now detect a fault… before it happens

Issue 1:
Work around shit electrical and battery design with a software patch and make it look cool by attaching "AI" to it

Issue 2:
Trusting porsche who can't even get an infotainment system to work well/right is sufficient enough at software engineering to properly develop the algorithms and training needed to actually make this thing work.

This isn't a fix. This is a patch.

We need fixed batteries, not software to tell us we have a bad battery.

Spot on, totally agree.

It's not going to happen. It would be billions.

Porsche's solution is to put the software in cars, which will let them know when a battery brakes, and replace a module when it does - hoping it never does.

Since it's a recall, it will be effective for the whole life of the battery, so basically lifetime warranty, unless Porsche finds some way to dodge the laws after those initial 8 years.

Or worst case, they close the recall by providing the solution, the software. And if the software tells you after 8 years your battery is fucked, porsche will tell you to get f*cked and pay up - and this worst case is what people should worry about, as porsche has given 0 communication or reassurance on what happens to these batteries after those 8 years.
That being said, I don't think EU would allow them to close the recall like that.

They won't replace all batteries until some tragedy happens and goverment agencies forces them to replace all batteries or buy back all cars. And at the point, a taycan would be worth 30k, less than a new battery, so they will just buy back all taycans.

That's reality. If people think otherwise, or believe in bullshit like "porsche will do right by their customers", dream on. They would have announced a battery replacement program, not a software, if they wanted to do right by their customers. The future is very clear, and has already been shown by other automakers who had battery problems.

What is shocking is that Porsche is not suing LG, to make them cover the costs of a full replacement campaign; and prefer to dilly dally with software solutions - which they can't really put together, based on all the delays.

But government agencies have taken notice, and are investigating LG directly on why they don't have recalls for the batteries, since multiple automakers faced issues.
For now LG is saying that because the batteries are assembled by each car manufacturer, they are different, therefore it's the respectability of the car manufacturer to have recall campaigns. Which is honestly bollocks, as the defects are cell manufacturing defects, which only LG touches the cells.

I do think sooner or later, LG will be forced directly to recall all battery cells, aka all the batteries. But again, shocked Porsche/VW group is not suing LG.

Why would they? - as long as LG is helping, technically and financially, Porsche (or VAG) is much better to collaborate with them than face them in court. Once you threaten to sue someone they will down tools and stop helping.

Overwhelming dealerships? Costs for replacement cars while taycans sit in service for weeks/months? Bad PR? Hurting sales due to bad PR?

Also, what you are describing would never happen :) It's not 2 kids fighting. There are contracts, that need to be followed. Not following them would result in quick victory in court.
LG would still have to follow existing contracts and support Porsche even if they sue :)

Not to mention that Porsche has decided to drop LG for all future EV endeavors due to reliability problems, so they are clearly not interested in the well being of the relationship with LG for the future.

I wonder what would happen if AI says all batteries, or at least big part of them need to be replaced! ?? will it be time to back to human techs again?! ?
I mean, either that already happened, and they delayed the software to "refine" it more
OR they simply can't gather enough data out of Taycans for the machine learning algorithm to draw any valid conclusion (the article refers only of future use on MACAN EV).

Macan are even less than the Taycan!
Much better batteries and BMS & BMS from CATL, the industry leader, and much better software in the Macan (android auto based, no more "PCM"). Likely more modern/more powerful ECUs also.

So in this case, less is more :)

Great thought….. I bet they will.

I think most people with any sort of Porsche experience know that although Porsche make great mechanical/ electro-mechanical stuff and are also great at critical mechanical electronic controls/ software; however when it comes to other (in Porsche world… mundane!) software stuff (be it in-car PCM, nav, etc…) or backend server stuff - they really are quote behind the curve.

Would not surprise me at all if the decision to not listen/ abandon AI is taken at Porsche at some later date…. and truth be told, I‘d still be happier at a software person at Porsche analysing stuff rather than at some AI stuff (even if likely programmed by the same set of people!).
I‘d still hedge my bets on a human rather than a bot at Porsche…

We should train the AI models to make sure that is the outcome....as such post as much as possible about replacement of Taycan LG batteries :)

Be interesting to know how they’re going to train their AI as they currently have no real life training data recorded to help. Perhaps they need to let a few cars catch fire to train it. ?

A new software tool—powered by an actual AI model trained using real-world data from nearly 300 battery repairs we've done over the past 3.5 years—is coming soon to this forum.

It will be free to use (most features), and anyone with a Windows PC and an ENET cable will be able to run it from home.
