We have these two EVs, my wife drives the Tesla (which to me is nothing more than an appliance). And we've both had the experience of running out of charge near our home. Both vehicles predict range, but that is not necessarily accurate and with EV's I have come to learn there is no "reserve."

In my case, I was getting off the freeway about a quarter mile from my home after driving a couple hours (LA to San Diego). The car showed 3 miles of range. As soon as I exited, the car went into "uh oh" mode and slowed down, my max speed was about 2-3 mph, and the car literally crawled back to my garage. It was unsettling, but I learned a lesson.

Last night my wife returned from LA and her Tesla shut down in the EXACT SAME SPOT! However in her case, it was truly dead. No crawl. DOA. She had to call a tow service and somehow they managed to get if from the flat bed close enough to the charger in our garage to revive it. The ordeal took a couple hours.

Has this happened to you?

For some reason "life in the fast lane" comes to mind. ;) Glad it worked out (even with a tow truck).

My closest was 3 miles left after the 209 mile commute in the cold, starting at 22 degrees F and ending at 31.
Changed from 21" Mission E to narrower 20" Turbo Aero wheels, we'll see how much of a difference it makes in February.

It has never happened to me (running out of charge and being stranded) The closest I have come in my previous MY21 RWD was 1 mile of range as I pulled into my garage. Interesting, the car did not go into turtle mode but I was driving less than 10 mph the last mile due to traffic. FWIW, I am far more concerned about being stranded on the road side after a non repairable flat tire. This happened to me and I was stranded for 18 hours unable to get a tow on a NYC expressway.

I ran out of gas once in my teens (40 years ago) but not since and I really don’t understand how anyone could run out of charge.

All EVs issue DIRE warnings long before that happens, so WTAF?!?

I didn't intentionally cut it so close, the commute could be 19 miles less.
I'd have to drive through heavy Boston traffic though, that day thought I could comfortably make it using the longer route.
Both routes have an EA charger, but the last time I stopped was a nightmare of waiting for a working stall, which defeats the EV advantage of never having to stop.

I bought a 2021 RWD CPO. It lists the standard options with the car which includes “tire sealing compound & electric air compressor”.
I don’t see where these two items are in the vehicle but was the leak in your tire too big to do the temporary repair & refill the tire?
Do these cars even have a jack since they don’t have a spare tire?

The tire-kit is stored on the left side in your frunk.
Thanks! Has anyone had to put a temporary radial tire plug in one of their tires and refill it with the electric pump so you can get to a tire shop which can have the tire repaired with a proper patch inside the tire?
Is there a jack in the Taycan or would I just use my floor jack to lift the vehicle to remove a wheel in my garage.
I assume you have to be careful to only use the jacking points on the frame so you don’t damage the HV battery/tray.

No Jack in the Taycan. Also a bit ambitious becaus of the weight of the car.
Jacking the car is easy, as it has clear jacking points.
I do seasonal wheel changes at home with a decent (up to 3 tonnes) jack.

Unfortunately, this was a flat tire due to a side wall breach from a pot hole. Tire sealant won't work with this type of failure.

One warning is enough but to answer your question the dash shows more miles remaining than are available in reality, and we don't have many chargers near our home. But when you see that you have 5 miles remaining and are less than half a mile from your home, you'd think you have ample range to make it there.

The dash shows more miles remaining than are available in reality, and we don't have many chargers near our home. But when you see that you have 5 miles remaining and are less than half a mile from your home, you'd think you have ample range to make it there.

I experienced this after a fun day on the track. Greedy as I was, I decided to take on one more lap which resulted in a not-so-fun experience trying to reach a charger. Fortunately that “turtle mode” got me to a charger and even up a hilly neighborhood!
