Anyone using their car for Turo? I see quite a lot of Taycans on the app, especially in larger markets. I was considering ordering a new car for use strictly as a Turo investment, but naturally am hesitant. I know you can make really good income from this and you have to shift your mindset away from this being your personal car to it being a business investment, but the thought still doesn’t sit well.

I'm a Turo customer and I treat the cars well, but placing a car that I care about on Turo is a question of scale. The more you rent out the vehicle the less likely you will have avoided the worst 1% chance of something going wrong. It’s a roll of the dice every time. The treatment from the average renter is going to be orders of magnitude worse than my OCD standards can handle.

There’s also the assumption that because the rental is priced at a premium that customers would naturally treat them well. But at the end of the day, it’s a rental and they’re going to treat it as such.

Thoughts?

If you care about your car, you don't make it available via Turo.

Not only do you risk damage, your personal insurance may not pay out for said damages. Keep in mind that the driver's liability covers whatever/whoever they hit, but not the repairs needed for your car, and if insurance finds out you were using it as a Turo vehicle, they may deny the claim.

Around here, Turo cars are so cheap, I can’t see how their owners are making much money. No way I would rent my car out.

Terrible idea.especially if you have 100K+ to invest - Real Estate, Index Funds, reducing debt/high interest liabilities , etc are much “better” options.

Do you still want to drive it yourself from time to time? Otherwise for Turo it doesn't have to be a Taycan right? I'd imagine there're probably better models out there that make more sense financially.

I rent out my son’s 2012 Subaru Outback on Turo while he's away at grad school and it rents like crazy and I frankly don't give a rat’s ass about that car. But I would never consider renting out my Taycan -- I just don’t think it's worth the risk. My reasoning is this: you're going to rent it out for at least $750/day. Now thinking like someone who’s spending that kind of money to rent a Taycan, I’d like to get a sense of how the car performs and I'd likely drive it pretty hard, which is precisely why I wouldn't rent it out on Turo or anywhere else.

Picking up a used RWD which is on 20” wheels specifically for this purpose could be an option. The RWD model would likely draw a different Turo clientele….

Why would a Rwd with 20i inch. wheels draw a different crowd? I was going to get a Turbo.

Someone renting a RWD is likely to be a bit more mature…..the 20” wheels are still good looking but less likely to be damaged if the renter isn’t careful.

If you want to be a Turo vendor, buy a used Subaru hatchback for that purpose and keep the Taycan for you. If I were dipping first toe in the Turo vendor world, I’d start at the low end first.

Sorry, I don’t follow. Why would a Rwd renter be any more mature than an Awd renter?
