What’s the collective wisdom, before I call the garage in the morning….is this one within the legal limit to repair or outside the limit?

I haven’t measured it exactly yet, but it’s got to be very close. I did one in a similar position and it was perfectly safe and good for the life of the tyre.

Shame about this one, it’s barely got 5 weeks to its name ?

I think you’re in the red there Sean unfortunately and repairing it (if even possible) might be more hassle than it’s worth.

Still sucks though.

Looks like a new tyre fitted is around £300 or so give or take. See what Porsche dealer and my trusty tyre bloke can rustle up tomorrow.

Thanks all ?

Uff yea. That's pretty close. Depending on the shop, some won't repair it if it's close for liability purposes.

If it’s not too late, I would still keep the tire, have it repaired and store it as a back-up.
It’s gone now to tyre heaven. It would’ve been a major repair anyway as it was on the shoulder. So no one would do a patch here as it’s not legal. It would have had to be sent away to a specialist, presumably for a vulcanising type repair.

Just got a screw embedded in my tire yesterday evening - only noticed when we went out to the car to go for meal and it was flat. Second in a year - fortunately mine was a full 1.5 inches in from shoulder so fully repairable (plug and internal patch to be safe) - I just took the wheel off at home and drove to Discount Tire a few miles from my house had it done in less than 20 minutes for free! My entire downtime driving there and back and reinstalling the tire was ca 45 minutes :)

A good rule of thumb (literally and metaphorically :)) is to place your thumb from inside the wear 'edge' of the shoulder (usually an obvious sharp linear edge) and if the nail/screw is within the widest section of your thumb its not repairable.

Were they able to execute the tire repair without having to rebalance the wheel?

No, they did that too at the shop - I painted the new weights gloss black at home before putting the wheel back on :) - def helped that I was effectively their 1st customer as got there right when they opened up!
