Hey folks. So just have a quick question. My wife backed into my car and the bike rack on the Jeep caused a significant scrape down to the metal and minor dent(s). Insurance thinks my deductible will cover the damage (1k). Anyone ever have damage like this and what was the cost to fix? Waiting on an appointment with the body shop.

Wow - sorry to see this - I had a new CF hood for my M4 (no damage to OEM, just a swap out, design upgrade) painted 3-4 years ago that was over $700 to complete. Suspect the repair here fixable of course but the issue will be repair, prep and repaint of the whole hood (no way they spot repair this!) vs say a new hood + paint. Latter may indeed be significantly more but poss. not and worth checking. In a repair/paint scenario I suspect you will be very close to 1K and possibly a couple of hundred over - entirely depends on where you get it fixed etc. of course.

Have you thought about divorce?
It crossed my mind. Seriously though, she immediately started crying, practically hyperventilating which is very out of character so I went through my feelings quietly. ?

That makes sense. My dealer suggested a shop so I trust their opinion. I was thinking they would replace it which seems expensive. Agree this isn’t a spot repair. Guess I will see what the shop says.

Its going to cost you even more than the hood repair I'm afraid. Now you also need to buy the Porsche bike rack option to prevent a recurrence...

Edit having seen you have the sedan : Its going to cost you a new CT, with a bike rack, to prevent the recurrence....

Ah yes. The hidden costs. The offending rack has been removed and put in storage. ?

I cant for a minute think that would be $1000 for a reputable shop to paint and repair.....
I don't think any bodywork hardly anymore can be done for $1000.
Just IMHO........

There’s no way that’s only $1k to repair unless your shop’s name is Maaco or Earl Scheib.
That’s what I’m thinking. Definitely neither of those places. This is going to be a headache.

why don't you get a quote from the body shop before claiming on your insurance?
Thought about that but I was undecided about even doing a claim. I still have an appointment for the shop to check the damage in 10 days. After thinking about it for a couple of days I decided to get the claim going since everything is taking longer than usual and my impression of the damage was that it would certainly cost more than 1k. Also, the estimate was done virtually. Photos only.

Depending on the condition of the paint, the need to blend into the fenders, 1k is certainly feasible. There are many factors that goes into the pricing. #1 of which is the person quoting you, then the shop hourly price, the alignment of the stars, how big the bulge in your wallet is, the badge on the car, etc.

Take it to a few shops and ask and don't forget to ask about what prep work they're going to do. I would hope that they would just take the hood off and paint it away from the car.

If you're going through insurance, just get them to replace the hood. Retail is $1,851. Btw, there is only 1 hood in the US. Once that's gone, it will have to come from Germany.

The photo here seems to show a cut that goes through the metal like a can opener. If so, I strongly recommend the hood replacement. A good shop will spend too much time ($) to weld this up before paint prep.
