Rumor: Taycan to go ICE

It's unlikely Porsche will have an ICE version on current Taycan because it's built for EV from the ground up where battery is located at the bottom of the car. They have to resign next generation Taycan with room for an engine and transmission.

The Taycan was engineered solely as an electric car. It would require huge changes to make it an ICE car and given the existing panamera I don’t see it as a big seller. The driving characteristics would fundamentally change with a gas engine etc.. There is a possibility the next Generation Taycan - 2028 - could be engineered to be either ice or electric but I believe the ICE version would drive more like a panamera than a Taycan . The only reason I think they would design it this way is if you were to end the Panamera lineup. Note I traded in a 2019 Panamera 4s for a 2020 Taycan because the Taycan driving dynamics were so superior to the Panamera.

Its a rumor but it would make sense for the 718 & Mecan.

718 EV delayed rather than cancelled due to market conditions.

Expect hybrid Macan EV and Taycan i doubt will go ICE. Panamera EV likely which if true surely has to be the end of something.

Making a model that can take both electric and ice drivetrain would be a horrible mistake. Just look at the BMW 5/i5 series. Before I ordered my Taycan I tested the i5-m60. There's so many things wrong with it not to mention the fake drive shaft tunnel in the interior.

Yes it gets a lot of compromise in that design. But on the other hand it seems to drive down the overall costs, so maybe BMW got that one right? And compared to the egg shaped purpose built EQS I like the BMW looks.

Yes it's cheap I give you that and I also like the impressive look it has. But:
- not enough room for the battery, so a tiny battery for this size car
- combined with a not so performant drivetrain
- and an abysmal charging rate (worse than my former 2017 model S100D)
- chassis not capable of supporting the battery weight resulting in heavy corner leaning
- and when applying full acceleration the car literally staggers
As a 25 year long BMW driver I was really disappointed in that car.

Also pointless given the Panamera is more or less the same vehicle - dimensions are similar - ST / CT is now the only differentiator

I have zero interest of ICE car. I wanted a Porsche for so long, I was down to 2 cars between Panamera and Model S back in 2015. I picked MS and that was one of the best decisions I made. I was so excited Porsche is making an EV version of sports sedan. Will not go back to ICE, period.

If Porsche is delaying 718 / Cayman EV, it's due to technical reasons, and not market reasons. Maybe they decided to rework some parts of it. Latest rumors suggest that all the battery will be in a block, similar to an engine, instead of a skateboard placement along the bottom; so the car has more of a traditional sport feeling. So maybe something to do with that.

That being said, I think any 718 / cayman EV delays are just unfunded rumors. The cars continue to be tested, and this winter they are due to be tested at the arctic.

Porsche has the chance to be the first true 2 door sport EV on the market. They would have to be stupid to miss that chance.

And even though not a confirmation of anything, when I expressed my interest in the cayman EV, as a move from my taycan, my dealer proposed to make a reservation for early 2025. So I assume that date is not coming out of thin air.

And a Taycan ICE is absolute bollocks. First of all, the Taycan has no space for a v8. If they would put it in front, they would have to change the whole face of the car to accomodate it; therefor making it just another Panamera. If they would put the engine in the back, then that would remove the whole boot. Who's gonna buy a 4 door sedan with no boot? Absolute bollocks.

My only hope is that the cayman EV / 718 EV will have 2 back seats / space behind the seats just big enough to fit a dog ?

Media rumors of EV’s sales dropping like flies are not only wrong overall but if the right vehicle is priced correctly, EV sales are screaming for some OEM’s. Even in the U.S. which is far from a leader in EV adoption increases (understatment), EV sales are continuing to go up 10% overall this year. As one example of good EV’s being sold at the right price, Hyundai/Kai just reported today that its EV sales are up 77% from one year ago in the U.S. .

Like everything else, but especially since EV’s cost more than comparable ICE’s, an EV must first be appealing in and of itself and again must be priced right. What does this say about future Taycan, Macan, and perhaps 718 sales, ???

Personally I think the 718 electric Porsche is delayed intro but not cancelled, that Taycan will continue to be EV only, and that the EV Macan will continue to be made. Might however, Porsche keep making ICE Macans instad of phasing them out all over as was originally announced, and/or even re-introduce them to certain markets where they are currently on hiatus?

the original Tesla Roadster was a battery behind the driver configuration - if you want low and sporty you put the battery in blocks around the car - rather than the floor…also you can have parts of the battery all over the place - most of it behind the 2 seats, but also some in the front fender area if you like…

I doubt the 718 was ever a skateboard design - you lose too much space for a low/small car…

I own both a Taycan GTS ST and a BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport, and have driven several 1,500km road trips over the last few months in both cars. I can tell you that the BMW often needs less time to charge over the whole journey because it is more efficient than the Taycan. The average charging power may be lower in the i5 than the Taycan, but you're actually adding more range per minute.

Meh despite all the hubbub about EVs only moving due to incentives, I got my Taycan without incentives and cannot see myself ever going back to ICE. It’s just a better experience period. If they turn the next gen 718 into an ICE vehicle, you can count me out.

Please no. I want as large as a boot as possible. Otherwise this is just a sunday afternoon car with no possibility to take it on a 14 day road trip.
