Look at this new Lexus ES EV interior screen placement that is titled "minimalism dominates".
I could not help but post it as I am imagining Lexus demographics operating dual monitor setup blocking their forward view while enjoying their luxurious drives.

I absolutely love Porsche's truly minimalist in dash screens and cannot stomach all other screen overload on other brands. Yes, it is small but not on the way. Yes, it is slow, but I think of it as good looking cars think slow but drive fast.

It's the industry trend, screens are getting bigger and bigger. Bigger screen means easier to read and more information can be displayed.

How to fit the large screen(s) and into interior design nicely is a different story. Most cars just stick a large rectangular LCD screen(s) on the dash board, I think it's ugly and disturb of views

The next generate Porsche will have bigger screen, too.

It's the direction most of the brands want to go: the (yet) illusion of full autonomous driving.
So: not driving anymore, rather watching movies/ play games.
To manifest marketing, they create cockpits aiming on that purpose.

Not Porsche. Theywent the right way, keeping it a driver's car with focus on performance.

I did not appreciate that from the beginning (coming from Tesla), but do appreciate it now, very much.

Big screens in cars might not be a thing in a few years anymore. I remember that EU launched an investigation into the safety of having so much crucial information and controls behind screen menus; and the dtistraction of screens - especially during night driving.

but yea, 2 such big screens is too much, and even newer Chinese cars started putting just 1 smaller screen + small crucial information dash

it's follow the typical Tesla market whereby customers wants to feel like they're using an ipad to drive the car. Obviously for many car enthusiast a minimalist screen is a turnoff.

Give me my gauges, dials and buttons! - j/k. I feel like the Porsche's interior design of screen placement is perfect. The center screen is on the smaller side, but a lot of the information is redundant and can be configured into the gauge cluster and HUD. BMW also does this too, i.e. they allow the user to configure and split up the information into multiple screens, good UI design IMO.

And it's not just the size. The big screens are all (or at least partly) off to one side rather than in front of the driver

Brrr, that Lexus design is so ugly -- and you see it a lot: they designed the dash board and then just slap a screen panel on it I'm sure it will be cheaper for the manufacturer though ?

There has been a realization that touch interfaces are bad (unsafe) while driving.
The solid state interior has been industrial designers' wet dream for a long time, but we already see the beginning of a return to direct access physical switch gear for essential functions.

Functionality and safety aside, i personally prefer the ornate look of switches, dials & knobs to bland & sterile screens.

haha. That clock has always been a gimmick since they introduced it on the 997 generation of the cars (Cayman, Cayenne) as part of the Sport Chrono package. Back then, it was literally a stop watch. It was just as difficult to use back then as it is now.

Interestingly, the Taycan, Macan and Cayenne all offers a compass (CT only). I'm going to try to retrofit it on my GTS. I think it's super unique, and reasonably useful as it's an altimeter and displays degrees heading.

I had a Lexus RZ 450e with a screen at least double the size of the Porsche one. Whilst it wasn’t integrated, the design of the facia incorporated it much better than the shots of the intended ES. I thought I would miss it when using the Porsche one but I haven’t really. The exception is the 3D camera - the much larger screen was far more useful then. When using the Sat nav it just filled the screen with the surrounding area which was irrelevant.

The Uk car safety rating will now penalise the cars that require the driver to use a screen for common usage such as heating controls. They say this is a distraction and thus a safety issue.

If the EU follow the UK’s stance then I expect the manufacturers will take notice.

It's one reason I never went the Tesla route. I'm sure it was cheaper to just bolt on a huge rectangular screen but I haven't seen one that is not just ugly. Porsche have integrated their screens well into the dash which looks acceptable, imo there's still way too much going on that distracts the driver but that's a self discipline we will all have to get used to.
