AC Charging Fault - Porsche Assistance Recovery & Courtesy Car

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue or any advice on the scenario I'm in...

Taycan GTS will not charge on AC, only DC. Home charger won't charge it, tried 4 different AC places, the emergency 13A slow plug charger, just faults...
I can't keep going out of my way to charge on a DC one, there isn't one on my route to and from work...

Called Porsche, they said first they could get it in with a loan car is 8th of August... jesus christ....

So, lady on phone advised my best scenario is let it run down to basically nothing then called Porsche Assistance so they take the car away and have to give me a courtesy/loan car..

Anyone experienced this or have any advice on what I was suggested to do. I don't want them to turn up, take the car and I'm stuck without one...
Are they usually pretty quick at organising a courtesy car and then fixing an issue like this if they take it away?

i know the batteries have 8 year warranty.... does the same warranty apply to the charging infrastructure of the car? bloody well hope it does!

do you have porsche assistance cover? if so that makes sense since its not technically a problem until you're out of juice and can't charge it. you could try asking them to do it based on the fact it isn't able to be charged but it still has a bit of charge in it and see what they say.

I've only taken mine (911) in once when i needed a courtesy car (and it was under warranty/assist) which I had to drive to cambridge to take it to , but i am pretty sure i had to agree a date to take it in.
actually the other time when i did use porsche assist (car pissed its coolant all over the driveway so couldn't drive it), assist picked it up and arranged for a courtesy car to be dropped off later that day. So I am fairly certain, if you have porsche assist and it looks like its going to be something you will be without the car for a few days etc then they will also sort a courtesy car for you. (its done via the assist thing, rather than the place you're taking the car to)

Yeah I have porsche assist. Got the Taycan from new and it's 2 years 6 months old.

I think my only option is to get it down to say 10 miles left, call them out and show it can't be charged based on the fact I'm not willing to drive around to find a DC charger and possibly run out on the road....

that wouldn't affect charging with a normal 3 pin plug charger or a 7.4kw home charger though would it

It does, I remember that being a huge fault for the early build taycans, but thought they fixed it when mine was built, late 2022 .... Is that what you were getting at?

it won't charge on my 7kw home charger or the 3pin mobile plug they give.....

Unable to do AC charging can mean onboard charger has failed.

I had this exact problem last November a few days before my warranty was due to expire and the day after I'd taken out the extended warranty. It needed a new HV charger to fix it. Took about 10 days for the OPC to diagnose and fix as the part had to come from Germany at the time. It was around £5k on the invoice from memory but covered by warranty.

My OPC only had a 10 day wait at the time and I was off on holiday when it happened so I just DC charged it sufficiently to get it there. My car is lucky to go three months without needing a visit to the OPC. I've been told the trick is to get it recovered and it goes into a different waiting queue. I haven't needed to do that yet as the waits aren't too long up here.

I have the 22kW charger btw.

So this sounds exactly my issue then. My plan is to call porsche assistance once I get home tonight (maybe after driving around a bit to get it down to 5 miles) and get it taken away. Just hope they can give me a rental/courtesy vehicle pretty sharpish.

In UK, my experience is that if the car is taken in by porsche assist they will not have a loan car available, but will arrange an enterprise hire car immediatly. Porsche loan cars seem to be always booked out for approx 3 months.

I thought this might be the case. As long as they don't give me a 2012 Ford Focus i will be ok.

Porsche Assist just farm the recovery out to AA and replacement car is farmed out to Enterprise.

I should know, it happened so often with my Taycan.

Enterprise are usually pretty quick, but don't hold your breath getting anything 'nice.
I once got a beat up old Lexus Hybrid with about 60k on the clock for weeks on end, one of the times the heater failed.
