30+ mins heating and 21.5 degrees car temp wasn't enough on Thur for -3 temp but 1 hour and 24 degrees last night was fine for -6. That used 5% of the battery.
Shame the rear heated screen and mirrors can't be set in the timer.

The charging timer ends at 05:30 (end of usual Octopus cheap rate) but the heating timer is set for a 07:30 depart.
Which is fine because it uses the cheaper battery 7p / Kw price rather than the 4x standard grid price for that time of day.

Winter impact is interesting.
On 100% charge today, range was indicated at 199 miles (circa 245 in the summer).
Assuming I charge to 80% (when LTE works, which it didn't last night!) and try not to drop below 20% (to cover emergencies), means I have an effective winter range of 120 miles.
You have a J1.2 or J1.1?

Ignore the guessometer for range until you start driving. The miles will fall off whilst the battery climatises to the prevailing conditions and how you have your AC set. Your consumption on short journeys will be scary also.

On my J1.1 - 85% is now only 171 miles (in Spring / Summer ~ 200) before I power on and drive a mile - it will be around 165 by then.

J1.1
My short commute of 5.5 miles is in the low 1 m/Kw at winter. Nearer 2 in the summer.

my 5 cents: driving the first gen (late 2023) Taycan year round in Eastern Europe. Summers - +30ish Celsius, winters - down to -25/30 sometimes. Works fine in both.

Last winter it spent a few days outside with half-charged battery, wind chill and -30 during the night. Heated up, opened and started just like it always does, nothing exciting to report.

It doesn't get that cold in Oxfordshire and I only need about 15 minutes of pre-heating but I would imagine the one hour standard was established during cold testing.
I use the standard timer setting with the charge set at 80% and preheat on and let the car manage the system itself which it does well IME with the current draw not being extremely high unless needed.
Same here; 80% charging and Standard timer… works well. I did leave the car at Heathrow for five days this week and forgot to switch the preheat off though, meant I had to visit IONITY on the M25 at 6am this morning on arrival, doh!

Out of interest, if your car is locked and your turn on the preconditioning / cabin heating via the app, does your instrument binnacle partially light up?

Porsche Taycan How good is your Taycan at winter? preHeating

But have you not called Porsche Assistance to pick up the car and provide a loan car. It is considered a traffic danger here in France to drive without being able to clear the windscreen and I assun´me the same is valid in UK?

porsche assistance will also get priority over other cars in a workshop!

this is horrendous.

btw, something that bothered me - does Audi E Tron GT have the same heater issue? Or Taycan only? Same platform give or take.

Yes, this is with Porsche assist. I’ve spent probably a whole day on the phone to them in total. The car is totally unsafe to drive in the cold. They say, “that’s awful, this is a priority to fix” then say they’ll call back with times and then it goes dead and the cycle starts again. We were going to get a Macan Turbo EV but there is no way we’ll get another Porsche after this one sadly: it’s a shame, I love the car, but Porsche in the UK couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery as the old saying goes

Ooh I have not heard that expression for a long time. I learnt it in Ireland during the 70ies! ?

Maybe they are completely snowed under with all the brake hose, battery check recalls now.

I found Porsche Assistance very quick yo react in both France and Sweden when I have needed them. They certainly tried to recover my car within an hour or so every time.

I live in Montana and have experienced subzero weather a number of occasions while driving my 2021 CT. Last year drove down to Jackson Hole in subzero snowy conditions and had no issues other than range reduction. I have never had a problem with the windows. I did have my passenger side heater fail while I was on the way to my dealer to have the heater replaced under the recall. So far the car has functioned down to -30F.

Sadly, the guessometer is as good as it gets. It annoys me that there is nowhere in the Taycan that I can read out the instantaneous power draw. But cold weather driving has been atrocious.

My Taycan has pretty poor efficiency anyway. Our Mini happily does 4m/kWh, the Taycan will do 3m/kWh in summer. On cold days, it struggles to get to 2.5m/kWh - even on long trips.

I know from accidentally having the recharge planner on that the battery heater draws enormous power. So best to preheat while charging at home. And the Taycan takes an amazing amount of time - relative to our Mini - to get the cabin up to temp. So, yes, 1hr min for preconditioning.

My feeling is also that the Taycan requires much more power (than our Mini) to keep the cabin at temperature. I have a suspicion that this comes down to the poorer insulation offered by the panoramic sunroof. Add to this the car's on-going effort to keep the HVB sweet.

Reason I returned to the forum today is that even after preheating the car for one full hour, the mirrors were still unusable because of moisture. Did I miss some control somewhere "Please clear mirrors during preheat"? I noticed also during driving that those mirrors aren't clearing as well and as quickly as they should. To the inside, there is usually some residual moisture that won't clear.

EDIT: And while we are on the subject, the steering wheel heating seems some weird after-thought. Did I miss an indicator in the dash that tells the status? Reason I ask is that the preheating activates the steering wheel heating but when I get into the car, I have no idea whether (it is on and) I need to switch it off.
