Exactly. Consumable item for track use.Iron brakes being smaller, would have likely cooked faster with the same abuse, but cheaper to replace.
True, but this means that for non-track driving iron brakes fail sooner, probably start fading sooner when doing spirited driving (especially through mountain highways - EVs are heavy).Exactly. Consumable item for track use.
Sure, but unless doing real heavy braking, we barely use the things. The joys of regenerative braking.True, but this means that for non-track driving iron brakes fail sooner, probably start fading sooner when doing spirited driving (especially through mountain highways - EVs are heavy).
Drove Model S’es for over a decade. The only place where I ever experienced brake fade was going across mountain ranges in a spirited fashion (battery also got hot, limiting both regen and max power from time to time). I haven’t experienced this with my Taycan (which has PSCBs). I wonder if I would have if I had iron brakes.Sure, but unless doing real heavy braking, we barely use the things. Agreed. When I ordered my first Taycan 4S, I added PSCB brakes to it. Mostly due to this informative video:That said, I think they are kinda stupid and I'd just as soon have the normal iron brakes next time, purely for replacement cost.
My only time was 20+ years ago heading down a steep Swiss mountain pass in a diesel Volvo S40. It was genuinely scary. Foot to the floor on the brake pedal, little to no stopping/slowing down power. And it happened so suddenly. Thankfully nothing was in front of us at the time, as I'm pretty sure we would have run into the back of them.Drove Model S’es for over a decade. The standard brakes in the Taycan is sized to cope with that. I've had some fun drives through alpine passes in Switzerland and Austria with mine and there was absolutely no sign of brake fade. I did end up with 25% higher SoC on one of the drives thoughDrove Model S’es for over a decade. You're not going to get the base steel brakes to fade on the Taycan in mountain ranges.Drove Model S’es for over a decade. You are not wrong. It was P85DL+. Even with lower regen, I’d still get battery thermal limits (due to regen and acceleration of course). Gotta say though, I liked how both the regen and max power limits would show up on the power indicator so the driver knows before hitting it, no brake overheating indicator though, so brake fade was an unsettling surprise the first time. I learned to watch for it after that. You're not going to get the base steel brakes to fade on the Taycan in mountain ranges.
The Model S regen is pitiful compared to the Taycan. The plaid in track mode is the only thing that comes anywhere close, with around 180kW of regen, but out of track mode they are like 80 kW. And every time you hit the brakes it goes straight to the mechanical brakes, which is the main issue.
Brake cooling should also be better on the Taycan.
Porsche will have spent $1bn developing a high performance connector of its own that is specific to the left and right sides, plus a different one entirely for the front. They forgot about the rear but branded an old VGA connector they had kicking around with a Porsche logo and charge $547 for the part when it breaks (when, not if, as they sourced them from eBay). How about using the cameras that already exist on all four sides of the vehicle? Just save it to a plugged in USB.
Not enough processing/encoding power in the car to encode the videos into H.264 or whatever other format to save to USB. Not even enough bandwidth to save and write raw video frames to USB (though it would require massive USB drives, both in bandwidth and storage space). People often look at Tesla's dashcam and think it's so simple, but Tesla's dashcam was born from the fact that Tesla massively overbuilt their hardware for FSD, and actually, the dashcam was the very first use of that hardware (they were years late with driver assistance of any kind after they dropped MobileEye [AutoPilot 1], so they implemented dashcam feature to appease customers by utilizing the AutoPilot hardware at least for something useful). How about using the cameras that already exist on all four sides of the vehicle? In the spirit of helping...have you tried...I have 4 screens (5 if you include HUD) and don’t have basic functions like being able to easily change radio stations or tracks forward and backwards. Or easily seeing multiple radio presets at once. These should be steering wheel functions for the seek buttons (every car since 1995) and easy default display on the radio.
I should be able to still have Navigation large and see what’s playing on the radio.
I don't find mine especially slow, but apart from that I agree on the above.Tons of wasted space on the air conditioning screen too. Why all the black empty space?
The driver screen you can customize some, but why not fully? Limited options on the left and right. Cant pick two items from either menu.
Plus it’s slow.
Thanks! I didn’t know about clicking the right button (still getting used to this car).In the spirit of helping...have you tried...
In the right driver's tube, select media. This allows you to see what is playing whilst having nav on the main screen. Or you could leave media on the main display, and select navigation for the centre tube for the driver.
Better still, with the first option...
As long as you're not on favourites (more in a sec) on media, with media selected in the right tube, if you then click the right-hand steering wheel button it will show you a list relevant to whatever you have playing. So if you have radio playing, you will get a list of stations. You can then scroll the right-hand wheel, and clicking it will select the station. (Note if the list of options is long, the tube "buffers". So you may have to select an intermediate option...the list then refreshes with the next chunk that you can scroll through. Annoying, but workable and in the UK it only takes a few seconds to get through all options on DAB (for example)).
If you have USB media playing, it will show you a list of tracks at the current "tree" level in the USB hierarchy and clicking a track plays it.
This way you can go backwards and forwards through lists very easily.
The "back" button on the steering wheel (right side) then exits the list view and shows what's playing.
For radio presets...these are set as favourites. Going to the "star" "source" on the PCM and then pressing "list" (next row up) shows you the list of presets and allows them to be selected.
The only hassle with favourites is that the right steering wheel button functionality mentioned above stops working IME (I think I may have had it working periodically, but not reliably). Which is infuriatingAnd this is one area where a very small couple of changes would make the whole thing work so much better:
1) At the top of every list that you get when clicking the right-hand button, they should have a "two dot"/"up arrow" option that takes you up a level. So if in an album, it takes you up to a list of albums, or if at the top of a list of albums it takes you to the different ways of viewing media (artist, album, tracks etc) etc....or if at the the top of a "source hierarchy", give you a list of sources (e.g. DAB, USB Media, Favourites etc - the same ones as appear on the main screen).
This simple change would allow you to fully navigate all available sources via one steering wheel button.
2) Make it work consistently whether in standard sources or favourites!
I don't find mine especially slow, but apart from that I agree on the above.
The "tubes" (including HUD) should allow you to choose any of the overall list on any of them. So if I want to put tyre pressures on all 4, why stop me? No need at all, and just complicates the software.
Same thing goes on the other screens (bar regulatory stuff). But that would involve much deeper architecture changes (treat every screen as "real estate" and let you drop anything anywhere as long as it fits the available dimensions). (Though on the a/c, I generally find I rarely touch it...so the screen's even more wasted).
My other "usability bugbears":
- Searching for media is utterly dire. There should be bugger all reason USB media cannot be searched effectlvely. It simply does not work IME. Let alone being able to do so using voice commands. It seems like they got as far as letting it search Spotify or Apple Music (telling me I need a subscription) but totally forgot USB media exists!
- I'd like an easy way in the nav to avoid the next xx distance. My 2007 Aston Martin (/Volvo!) had this. It's seriously useful. (Also missing from 2024 Volvos now though, so not just Porsche! They all seem to assume things like Google traffic works flawlessly. It doesn't)
- I'd like some of the functions available in the MY25 J1.2 interface to be made available on the J1.1...charging options in the nav (e.g. being able to include/exclude whichever companies I want), charge capability info and simpler timers, colour wheel on ambient lighting etc etc. None of these should be that hard (because the hardware is the same!) and if they were sensible about the way they develop things should actually make life easier for them!
I only accidentally happened upon the right button click. I'd read a lot of people setting up one of the 2x configurable buttons for skipping and found that oddThanks! I didn’t know about clicking the right button (still getting used to this car).
As far as using the passenger screen for media, I like that idea, but that screen only seems to be active when someone is sitting in the passenger seat.
Not sure if that’s by design or if there’s a setting to change that.
I do use favorites for radio presets since I have a mix of FM and Sirius/XM stations I use. Scrolling through all of XM would take forever.
