Big Discounts on new Taycans

Re Audi, I’ve been puzzled why Audi didn’t get the wagon and call it the etron GT Allroad. Seems like the etron GT and especially the RS now need significant discounts to be sold, and are probably cannibalizing Taycan sedan sales to some extent. Having Porsche make only the sedan and Audi make only a wagon seems like it would have been a better strategy overall for VAG?

Thank god they haven’t done that. (I would not have been an EV owner if that were the case.) Given that the etron was a corporate gift to Audi of an all-Porsche designed car, i am guessing they were not in position to be choosers. The CT/ST is integral to Porsche’s image of “fast, luxurious utility”, so not having that in their (RoW at least) market would have led to far fewer sales. Not least, Porsche became part of VAG by greedy unfortunate circumstances, and I suspect the family always wanted to regain independence. (It kind of eventually happened, and one can see continued signs of further separation- software, going it alone with e-fuels etc.)

I think that many Audi wagon owners (even of the smaller A/RS4) would be dissatisfied with the smaller capacity of the Taycan CT (especially with rear seats down), and a wagon variant of the etron GT would be similarly limited.

I had 2 RS4 Before moving to Taycan CT4S- I would swap back in an instant if it weren’t for the EV financial incentives.

Just look at the inventory of sedans vs CT. Kind of like E-class mercs sedan vs wagon. When I was looking for one for my wife nationally, I came away with about 1:10 ratio of CTs to sedans. The config I wanted was available in about every other dealership if I wanted a sedan. CT... there were 3 nationally that fit even a minimal requirement if I included both CPO and new.

So I had zero surprise there were no incentives for CTs from PCNA.

There are absolutely many less CT's in stock, many less CT's produced too. For example, AFAIK for the entire MY2023 Porsche produced only 128 Turbo CT's for the entire US market (so just over 2 per state), and some of them might have sunk on the ship which went down. That said, should CT or ST body shape be just considered an option? If you look at the ratio of Taycans without vs. with Night Vision Assist for example, it will be much greater than sedan vs CT, so does that mean the incentives won't apply to cars with night vision because they are even rarer than CT's? How about MY2024 Carrera White Metallic Taycans? Also very rare as compared to other colors, since the metallic white was discontinued shortly after start of MY24 production. So as you can see, depending on how you slice the inventory, different cars will appear rare. This is why I was surprised Porsche limited their incentives to only sedans.

Of course it could be that wagons (CT/ST) are just selling much better than sedans. I could buy that, as they are much more practical.

They should have made the eTron GT a hatchback, would have competed with the Model S much better and be more practical.

I’m buying a new 2023 ST GTS that is being heavily discounted. With a cash purchase, I assume there are zero incentives from Porsche, correct? The only way to get the $7500 Fed credit is to lease, but the lease deals are terrible. What about the $10000 Porsche EV credit, does that apply to the Sport Turismos?

I’m finalizing the financials with the dealership today so would really appreciate some help on whether to buy with cash or to lease.

I just got off the phone with the finance manager at the dealership. He said that despite the incentives from Porsche and the government, it doesn't make sense to lease the car because of the deep discount they are offering off the msrp. The residual value remains the same and the sales tax therefore remains the same. I am getting $23k off of msrp, so it seems to make more sense to just purchase in cash.

Picking the car up after the holiday on Tuesday. Nice way to start the New Year! Specs of my car are below, along with a few bad photos taken by my salesperson.

@Polar993, that is a killer deal any way you look at it. I would love to hear more stories like this from others. Could you share if this is a stock car or you built it custom and waited and if so how long.

For context for anyone getting these amazing deals now:
I got the worst of it with order placed in May of 2022, for 2023 when $7,500 ended, price increased for new model year but same car, with delivery 13 months later, impacted most likely by the heater issues, interest rates at delivery way too high. Configured exactly like I wanted, but no discounts at that time in general, but I got 4% since we buy and service with the dealership.

Might check with @whitex about the option to lease, then payoff the least at the end of Month 1. Apparently they can't stop you AND you get the $7,500 rebate. He can confirm.

I definitely would have bought that!
Otherwise, the etron GT is about the same exterior size as the A6/A7, but with the trunk size of the A3.

True, my CT cargo capacity is far less than our A6 Allroad. Only marginally bigger overall (I think) than our i4. But Audi could have expanded the width a bit on its theoretical etron GT Allroad. Although sure seems like any tweak on the Audi variant would have been better than the actual version, whose only advantages over the Taycan would appear to be a bigger dealer network and more packaged options for those who dislike the Porsche a la carte approach.

Okay, sure, that makes sense.
So how about we make our theoretical etron GT either a hatchback version of the Taycan sedan or a larger-cargo version of the CT?

True, my CT cargo capacity is far less than our A6 Allroad. Only marginally bigger overall (I think) than our i4. But Audi could have expanded the width a bit on its theoretical etron GT Allroad. I would have seriously considered it. As is, I eliminated the etron GT by opening the trunk in the showroom.
