Hello, Taycan people!

I’ve got my 4S on order! I’m very excited. It won’t be here for a couple of months, but I’m having an electrician go ahead and install a NEMA 14-50 plug for me in my garage next week. (I was able to grab a spot on his schedule, so I took it.)

My build includes the Porsche Charging Dock, and I have a couple of questions about it that may have a bearing on the positioning of the NEMA plug that I’m having installed.

(Yes, I know that several folks recommend other charging docks, but I figure I’ll give this one a try. And I already learned from other threads that I need to get the plug installed upside down. Thanks!)

I’d like to make sure the Charging Dock is mounted firmly, so I want the center of it aligned with a wall stud. I’ve found the Charging Dock installation guide online, but there are two things it doesn’t tell me that will help me figure out where to have the plug mounted:
  • What’s the horizontal distance from the vertical middle of the charging dock to the vertical middle of the “slot” that the NEMA outlet fits in? In other words, how far to the left of the center line of the Charging Dock is the center line of the plug? I’ve attached an image below from the installation guide for orientation.
  • Once the installation is complete, does the cord wrap around the Charging Dock? If it does, then I’ll need to make sure I mount it low enough to be able to reach the top easily. Is there a recommended height for installation?

I don’t have the charging dock so I can’t answer your question, but I wouldn’t worry about needing to mount it on a wall stud. It really isn’t very heavy.

see picture below - I did a rough measure - it appears too be approx 3.25 2.25 to 2.5 inches rough from the centerline of the dock to the centerline of the "hole" for the plug…

"right edge" of the square cut out for the NEMA plug is approx center line - and the interior dimensions of the "cut out" are 4" 15/16th

I always like mounting things on studs so that I don't rip them off accidentally of the life of the item.

yes - the cord wraps around the dock - it works really well.

those the dock/PMCC manuals - in multiple languages - I can't bring myself to throw them away - and the dock is soooooo large of a cavity that I've chosen to store them there - probably a fire hazard one day...LOL

Haha, recycle them dude! It is a bit of a fire hazard, and you can always look at the manual online!

This is super helpful! Thanks for posting the photo with the measurements. This is just what I needed.

Out of curiosity, how high off the floor is it mounted?

too - high - the screen is "above my eye level" - I mounted it "above my multi-Tesla EV charger" setup - because there was no more horizontal room - only room "above" the chargers

I'd recommend the top of the dock at shoulder height…

I disagree; I intentionally mounted the charging dock pretty high on the wall - the bottom of it is about five feet off the garage floor, and the top is probably about six and a half. It's actually a fair bit taller than I am, and I have to look up a bit to see the screen, but it greatly improves the ease of charging and disconnecting - it's high enough that the loop of charger from the dock to the plug handle can reach back and forth to the car without having to coil and uncoil it every time I use it, and without resting on the floor when the plug handle is sitting in the cradle. This is the third EVSE I've used and so far this arrangement has been the best.

Originally I thought those manuals contained only non-English information, however upon closer inspection I found that those manuals all have EN (English) sections and contain information of interest.

Surprisingly I found that one contained the installation instructions for the Charging Dock that I couldn't find earlier and downloaded.

BTW, the EN section isn't always the first tab...

Well I'm 6' 7" tall, so higher is usually better. I suspect that having the top of the charging dock somewhere between my shoulder and the top of my head will be just about right.

Thanks to everyone for the info and the photos. This has been super helpful and I'm gonna go get out my stud finder!

I agree with @LonePalmBJ that mounting the PMCC and its wallbox high enough provides flexibility to either partially uncoil the charging cable and not have it touch the floor or uncoil it further and have it rest on the floor. The midpoint of my wallbox/PMCC is at about 63" (160 cm) above the floor. My primary reason for mounting it rather high, though, was to install a second 50A outlet and create enough space for a second EVSE below the Porsche one for the day my wife goes electric as well.

Swap the manuals for a cooling fan =)
tell me more abou the cooling fan - part numbers? link? how are you powering the fan - and does it always run - or temp based or only when the PMCC is “on”...

I’d love to hear about your setup.
