Yea, but what if people parked their cars at the pump while they go shopping or eat?
Fast enough and numerous enough…

If you can’t wait by the car while it charges, it’s not fast enough (note that nothing is currently fast enough by my standards; hence my lack of EV travel).

If you’re waiting on someone else’s car, they aren’t numerous enough.

First one helps the second one too.

So the current gas stations haven’t reached the fast enough and numerous enough yet since I have had to wait in the past (heck, even yesterday when I was filling up my rental in California).

Unrelated tangent: I was in Monterey county last week. Unfortunately had no time to peek into Rennsport event, but it was refreshing driving past Laguna Seca yesterday afternoon (on my way to the airport) and seeing more Porsches than Teslas all along the way. Did not see a single Taycan though.

Sorry to say that I don’t agree that you have the right to touch with someone else’s property.
Don’t be sorry. Here in the US people are not near as considerate as people in the UK or Europe. Since covid, we have had an explosion of people that are just AHoles, from just being rude to committing petty crime, shoplifting, assaults etc. There’s no consequences. Until there are consequences, like people touching the handle of a public charger plugged into your car, people won’t change their behavior. YMMV.

The final stages in devolution of society - lack of respect for any order, making irrational, all-emotional decisions without consideration for consequences or even logistics, ever growing sense of entitlement. It has happened to civilizations before then (e.g. Roman empire), typically after citizens have grown fat and happy. Then a new, hungry civilization takes over and dominates for a while, until they reach the fat and happy stage. If I was to guess, China is the next dominant civilization to replace the US and the western world.

I miss the days of personal accountability, you know where people were responsible for consequences of their own actions, rather than blaming it on anything and everything (society, other people, parents, great great grandparents’ actions).

?

If it’s a regular occurrence in a particular location, then I would say, no, not fast enough and/or not numerous enough in that area.

However, the point isn’t to never wait under any circumstances ever. Just to not have it be a regular thing. So, isolated instances of waiting are not an indication of insufficient resources.

I’ve stated before that the number of times I’ve had to wait for gas are very very rare. I didn’t have to wait on any of my fills on this trip, CA included. Nor did I ever see any gas stations that would have required waiting while I was traveling.

May I suggest less time on Fox News?

I am in the clan that if someone hogging a limited charging infra while other could be using it is more disrespectful than unplugging someone else car. If you don't want your car to be unplugged, you should have the decency to either stay around or monitor the charge and get back swiftly when done.

I get your point. I agree we need more DC chargers. My point is that anecdotal evidence from you or me doesn't prove anything. If I wanted to use anecdotal, I could honestly say without lying that 33% of my gas fillups this year I had to wait in line, while less than 2% of EV DC fillups. That is because I only filled up gas 3 times this year, while DC charged probably ~50 times, and only had one wait (which happened to be at a Tesla supercharger in CA). You drove from STL to CA with no wait for gas, I drove from Charleston SC, to border of Florida, then back up to Seattle, WA in a Taycan, 29 consecutive charges, not a single charger had a wait. Here are the pictures of how full each of them were, noting that if the charger got fuller while I was there, I actually used that picture in the collage below - so it represents the fullest state of each charge location while I was there.

Like I said, anecdotal evidence is not much of evidence.

Sad to say it will probably get worse before it gets better.

Given the bollox written by some new owners and press it is clear plenty of people haven't bothered to learn anything about EVs or batteries before use. Loads don't even consider charging to 85% or so rather than "filling up" like they always have and consider it a major fault of EVs rather than an indication of their ignorance.

Ignorance is almost always the problem and as more people get EVs more of them are likely to be ignorant of them since the knowledgeable ones already have one.

As far as etiquette is concerned I am afraid if some twat leaves their car connected when fully charged they the inconsiderate one and are lucky to only get unplugged IMHO.

Maybe an explanation why and an escalating time charge added once the car has stopped charging would concentrate the minds of the selfish???

Just another example of the unthinking, inconsiderate people that seem to be everywhere these days. Don't even think how they would feel if it happened to them.

As I say, I think the charging companies have to introduce severe overstay charges. This is happening to me pretty often now. Chargers are a scarce public resource - allowing charged vehicles to occupy them without any kind of penalty seems crazy.

Personally I’d never dream of leaving my car at 100% and plugged in. I routinely use IONITY at Baldock on my way to work. If the station is quiet I’ll let it get to 100% as this means I’ve a clear run to work and home again with no stopping, and as I leave a good buffer of time to allow for waits for a charger, it’s kind of factored in. If they’re busy then I’ll stop at 85% or so and factor in a stop on the way home. It does baffle me when you see cars plugged in, fully charged and abandoned. It’s just simple courtesy surely?

That said, I’d never dream of unplugging another car without permission, just not in my DNA. As stated before I’d just be typically British and passive-aggressive before being all smiles when the owner then turned up!

I'm tempted to buy some hard-to-remove windscreen stickers with a polite notice printed on them...

But then that's getting petty

Yeah well, I'm portuguese so there's a higher chance of me pouring gasoline on the car and set it on fire if it's hogging up a space... I'm just not willing to carry a jerry can full of gas in an EV jk jk ?

It depends on the day really. So far I have unplugged 3 cars, 2 of them at the same day so my track record is pretty ok I think. I usually check chargers beforehand on my app. If they're occupied I just choose another one. It's those special circumstances that let Mr. Hide out.

In any case, I repeat, in Portugal, a car that is *NOT* actively charging, can be towed by the Police if requested. All that is needed for that to happen is a) the charging stall having the plate "em carga" and b) an angry EV owner taking the time to call the cops and waiting for them to show up with a Tow. unplugging a fully charged or erroed out vehicle is the lesser evil for the infractor to be honest.

I still feel bad about doing it.

Totally understand - apologies if my thread came across as criticising you, wasn’t my intention, merely stating how I wouldn’t feel able to do it. No judgement on my part here!
