The more I read about these types of crazy costs associated with Taycan the more I get dissuaded on buying one. There was another recent post on a minor scratch in the battery shell but Porsche Service suggesting replacing the battery for $50k or so. Some of the regular maintenance also has been quoted around $5k or so for cabin filter change etc. type minor work. All of this goes completely against the notion that EVs overall cost less over their lifetime on maintenance etc. costs. Probably true for T and others but does that really apply to Porsche or just because its Porsche you have to assume its high maintenance?

You're not wrong to be concerned. These repair costs are astronomical even by Porsche standards.

Buy a used one, you'll save a mint and if CPO you'll have a better warranty than new.

I will not buy a new Taycan for sure. If I buy, will be a CPO. Will let someone else take the depreciation hit.

Given the cost of replacement and associated headaches, this is another area on the Taycan that is worth considering a PPF treatment. While not designed for impact resistance, that thin piece of film may help in reducing the impact of a chip on glass.

I experimented with windshield protection on this car. It was fairly thick rigid plastic. I took it off because it distorted my view too much, but I am considering having them cut a strip for the leading edge on the roof whenever it gets out of sick bay.

Apparently it is major surgery requiring removal of the headliner, removal/replacement of the windshield, etc etc.

Absolute nightmare.
The shop tried to remove the roof without taking the windshield off, that cracked my windshield, the $12k includes the roof glass and windshield. I still like the car though even after all of this. My last last car(AMG GLC63) was worst and i dealt with it for 2 years lol

This is what I was told also, the windshield must come off and accounts for a large chunk of the cost.

Sorry you are going through this. I also had a crack in my panoramic roof. It was very similar in appearance and size to your crack. The original repair quote was about $7000 from the dealer. Allstate insurance countered with about $5000. Some negotiations ensued. The final repair cost agreed to by the dealer was $5503.58. The glass roof was $3500.99, the labor was $1768.50 and the pane adhesive set was $234.36. With tax the total was $5834.08, completely paid for by the insurance company. This was in November, 2022.

I am so sorry to hear this about your car. Also, very concerning on the cost. I hope you have your GTS back soon!

To me the main thing about this stuff is the effect on insurance cost. As long as you have proper insurance, they will pay, but when many of us go through these expensive fixes, the cost will go up.

In my Taycan I've had to have the windshield replaced twice due to cracks. Never had an issue with the panoramic roof, I feel it's quite unlucky for this to happen.

Now after those two windshield replacements I've learned to take the response to any type of rock hit a bit more seriously. Here in Finland the biggest risk is during the beginning of winter time when studs come off tires and those often cause serious damage to the glass.

Then I've made the mistake to leave the car in a warm garage, allowing for the crack to expand from heating.

The key thing to do is get the area of impact ASAP treated with a quick fix, which stops it from expanding. Which is what I will do next time. Places that do those quick fixes are everywhere in Finland, so I haven't felt the need to carry a fixing kit myself.

The general rule is that as long as the crack is no bigger than a coin, it can be fixed with these quick fix kits in a way that stops it from expanding. If it has the time / environment to expand beyond that, it will likely require a lot more than just a quick fix.

Man that is such a bummer. A rock put a chip in my windshield a while back and I booked the first appointment I could at Safelite. Not inexpensive but i think they did a pretty good job. It has not spread so far. I love the car but I am scared of it.

If you don't mind me asking: do you have glass coverage through your insurance comp?
I do and it's been amazing. Complete windshields replacement at no cost except the deductible ($10 a month (I think)) but I've never considered if it would cover the glass roof as well. I think I'll check...
Windshield chipping is quite common in Colorado due to all the gravel they spread in winter.
