A tiny idiotic rock chip has turned into an absolute nightmare.

I took a rock chip coming back from Porsche Palooza '23 - my dealer told me it would be over 11K to repair so I said screw it, I'll live with the star.

A month or two ago, the star spread into a full blown crack. My insurance company has only paid for a fraction of the repair and (so far) has refused to adjudicate the remainder of the claim (which is now 14K!)

My insurance company sucks, but honestly this is straight stupid. There is no planet where it should cost this much to replace a piece of glass.

Meanwhile my car has been in the shop for two weeks and hasn't even been looked at.

The whole thing has me so sour on Taycan in general, my insurance company, and the world.

What insurance company did you have? Want to make sure I never use them!

Getting Xcel ppf next week. Should I do the glass roof? For another $500 +/-? They don’t recommend the windshield for various reasons but assume the roof will work. Any downside except $500?

I don't advise the windshield either, it will make you crazy with distortion.

What I am considering, after the repair, is windshield PPF applied to the glass roof for the first 6 inches or so. Wouldn't be visible inside the car, as that area is under the headliner...and might prevent this happening again.

This has happened to me on two different Taycans now, so I consider it an endemic fault of the car.

I had the glass roof done with PPF at the same time as everything else when new except windshield and have had a few stones bounce off roof (England has loads of potholes which spew stones over the roads at momment) without any damage whether it was saved by PPF can’t be sure but I think it is worth doing anyway.

I have my pan rood covered in PPF. I realised this won't stop a big rock but reduces the chance of a crack hopefully. I also have what is supposed to be windscreen film. I'm not convinced this is quality film as it was cheap and seems thin but at least it's giving some protection. And yes it's not great to look through and affect the wipers sometimes causing noise but I'm living with it for now.

These horror stories so worry me so sorry to hear your insurance won't cover it. I think I'll contact mine and ask.

Sorry to hear about this and hope it gets sorted quick. That’s a shame though it is such an amazing car outside of these Porsche pricing and battery faults. Wife is about to get out of hers it’s a shame though it is an amazing machine. Vehicle has been great for her but she wants something she doesn’t have to worry about scratching or hitting a curb.

I’m sure I will be less crabby once I’m driving it again.

Despite comments here I have had my Stek on my windshield 2.5 years now and still with zero distortion or color change - distortion is almost entirely down to the expertise on install but indeed a higher quality PPF helps too. It took 2 attempts to get mine installed correctly - not trivial.

I am 100% certain I’d have minimum three serious chips or possibly a cracked windshield to date if I did not have this on. To me that $400 was cheap insurance - just to avoid the hassle factor alone is more than worth it.

Keep putting the pano coverage off but this latest example pressing home the pt.!!

Yes, but the sunroof does not count as glass.
Quote straight from my insurance agent (who also is one of my best friends, hence informality):
"Pretty sure you have a zero comp which means pretty much everything other than a collision is covered at no cost, vandalism, hail or windows."
So there may be options that do cover it.

The phrase "Pretty sure" will be the key should you ever try to use it in court. It qualifies the statement as an opinion, rather than commitment.

Of course.
Being that it's Saturday and he's probably drunk on a golf course, I didn't expect much more. He will verify on Monday and confirm with me, if is otherwise I will correct my post.

The thing I've noticed on this forum over the last 3 years.

It started off with much excitement and posts about configurations and amazing driving experiences.

Then an occasional fault started to appear.

Now it's littered with threads about failures, depreciation, sky high repair costs, and a non existent - customer service from Porsche.

Its really quite depressing. Turned me from an enthusiastic 1st time Porsche owner, to someone who feels like he's sitting on a ticking time bomb.

It will be my first and last Porsche.

I’ve been driving Porsches since 1998. I love them; the driving experience is unparalleled.

I think most of the problems here are teething pains as they adopt EV tech. The Taycan feels like a direct answer to the Model S - to a fault. Perhaps it was rushed.

I’m generally pretty happy with mine, except for the 2 extra doors and seats I wish it didn’t have.

The depreciation makes me crabby, and I’m crabby when it’s in sick bay delayed by slimy insurance companies.
