J1.2 TPMS

So I fitted set of 20" GTS Aero wheels from a J1 car to my J1.2. The car is not recognising them and throwing a TPMS system error fault. Looking for help:

• Do the sensors need coded, paired or similar to the car, forum search suggests not.
• Are the sensors different on J1.2 vs J1, is there a part manual online?
• Is there a way to force it to try and re-learn the sensors? I have tried switching the tyre size in the TPMS menu but this does no trigger a new search (it did the first time after fitting the wheels but now just says TPMS system fault)

The wheels I bought were off a new J1 car and appear (I think?) to have the TPMS valve stalks, see photo

Have you tried changing the tire type in the TPMS so that it knows it needs to pair again? Curious if that works for you. I expected that to work to pair to the new TPMS in the new wheels I put on, but it didn’t work. Online it appeared the facelift used the same TPMS sensors as J1 - but a change to new sensors would explain my problem.

I have 3 sets of tires for my 2023 Taycan, all I do is swap the tires, change the tire size/type in the PCM, then drive it for a bit. I did notice that the very first time the car saw the new wheels/TPMS it took longer to recognize (20 minutes of driving maybe), but wheels it has seen in the past are recognized very fast (1-2 minutes). I have never seen an error though.

I did this immediately after the swap and before driving, the TPMS display went into pressure search mode as normal (blue spinning animations) but after a while it threw the error and now it is just stuck with error (and won't go back into pressure search mode, even changing wheel type in the TPMS menu).

As a knock on, Active Ride does not work either -it must need to verify that the tyre pressures are within a normal range.

Wheel swap back tomorrow, bummer as I was enjoying the reduced road noise of the Michelins vs Hankooks.

If you are going to mess with TPMS at the very least buy a tool. I have bought an Autel,and use it way more than I ever thought I would. It is so nice to check tire pressures cold without pulling a valve cap or driving the car to wake them up. The tool was basically free when I bought 8 sensors.

That’s interesting, can the Autel change the frequency? What model of Autel do you have?

I have done exactly the same. I have an Autel tool plus I bought some Autel sensors that you can programme by copying the values from the existing working sensors. Just copy the values from each corner of the car and programme a new Autel sensor. Once I had done that I asked my local tyre dealer to swap the sensors that came with my non OEM winter tyre set.

’PROBLEM solved.

Porsche service wanted in the region of 1500 Euros for a similar excersise, while I spent about 300 Euros for the tool and sensors and then 150 Euros for fitting and rebalancing the tyres!

I later found out that the local tyre shop uses Autel tools as well and also could supply the sensors!

There Are also other tools and sensors that can be programmed, and same brand as the Porsche sensors, but I can not recall the name just now. However Autel has worked without any issue for 4 years now.

My winter wheel set came with universal sensors from https://italsensor.de/
These can be programmed with only a smartphone.

I have not installed the wheels on my J1.2 yet and now I am nervous, after reading this thread, but I will report back once i do.

That’s interesting, can the Autel change the frequency? What model of Autel do you have?

With their universal sensors it will do either frequency and can even reprogram the sensors to change the frequencies I believe. I -think I payed around $240 US for my unit, but that was a while ago.

Ok, so I can unfortunately confirm that the TPMS on my new set of winter wheels also do not work on the MY25 Taycan.

I am also not sure that any of the programmable solution work yet. My Italsensor TPMS are programmable, but the programming for Taycan is for all models "2019-01 - 2025-12", which obviously doesn't work. The TPMS for MY25 might be too new.

I have also been unable to find any part numbers for the new TPMS, so the next step is to figure it out with Porsche parts department, I guess.

That does not sounds good. I have ordered a Bartec TPMS device, similar to the Autel others have mentioned but it can program other manufacturer's sensors. Hoping it will get my J1 winters talking to the car. It could be the TPMS learning is different on J1.2, I was reading there are different learning methods and some require programming the ECU with the TPMS sensor ID. Will report back once I get to test out the Bartec.

So Porsche decided to change a perfectly usable system (I swap between 3 sets of wheels on my J1 Taycan, it just works), rather than spend the same resources fixing any known issues (like PCM getting stuck on the "PORSCHE" boot splashscreen, or app reporting car is in privacy mode even if it isn't, etc, etc). Granted, screwing up things that work is much easier than fixing things, but wouldn't it be even easier to just do neither?
