So, had some warranty work completed this week (heater…) and asked the dealer to check the battery SoH while the car was in.

2023 GTS ST, only DC charged less than 10 times and regular home charging to max 85%. Currently 22k miles and SoV rated at 92%, which I reckon is okay…

This is high and I do not believe it. What evidence did they provide?

Also, it is called SoH (State of Health).

I have been following the best battery health protocol, and my measurements have been consistent with the herd. My 92% SoH went by around 15k miles and by 20k miles I was at 86% and now still at 86% at 24k miles.

There is significant difference between the two, because I also measure so called Usable Battery Energy and at 15k miles I was at 79kWh and now it dropped to 75kWh. This means when my battery is fully charged at 100%, I have 75kWh available to me. That is useful for quickly calculating actual Range by using car's real time reported efficiency in kWh/100miles.

I will believe you if you get your own measurement via OBD/CarScanner app.

8% degradation in 22k mi when charging to 85% is considered good? My Rivian showed nearly no degradation after 25k mi. Is this about different battery technologies?

Curious about this as well. The Mach Es with a lot more mileage had a lot less degradation.

That said, Ford charges slower, has a bigger upper and lower buffer and is a more more conservative with power delivery.

I wonder if it’s just different battery tech or just the nature of delivering more performance and faster charging.

How does the degradation compare to Tesla? They’re pretty loose with the charging speeds and performance as well.

Also, have you tried doing a “full charge” before testing SOH? Meaning you drive it to below 20% then do a level 2 charge to 100%.

With other cars, that’s necessary to get a more accurate reading. If you haven’t charged to 100% recently, the car is just guessing on capacity.

From a quick search, looks like the Taycan procedure is similar:

There are two checks as mentioned above; the 'quick check' takes seconds and used to have a +/- 10% accuracy (I think it has changed recently). The 2nd - much more detailed check - option is more accurate but involves a pre-prep drive/charge process.

For basic info the quick check is sufficient for Warranty cases.

Sorry, obviously SoH…

I don’t have any evidence from them other than a written statement included as a part of the warranty work detail.
I am not saying it is not right, I would just like to see evidence from the OBD/CarScanner. I highly recommend all Taycan owners to get this and scan every 1k miles as I do. The benefit is to catch any sudden drop in SoH that can potentially trigger a warranty claim milestone and cell graphs can show outlier cells which to me would be a clear indication of getting Red Circle of Death soon. Yes, the dealer will have to do a long drawn out procedure to get warranty qualified SoH, but we have evidence that the difference is 1%-2% vs. a quick OBD scan read.

This is US but UK would have similar: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088LW211V

Sounds fine yes. Mine was at 90.8 at that point and is around what you would expect from a battery after some use. It's hard to compare with other brands as they all have different ways of estimating and showing SoH.

The ‘instant check’ accuracy caveat is plus or minus 5%
Whether that’s accurate enough for warranty purposes depends on the value & time period

I mentioned it had changed recently; I didn't want to quote incorrectly; I couldn't get to the bulletin info when I replied.

I haven't had any issues with SoH checks during repairs; the majority of the module checks are done using a check tool via PAG's systems - hence multiple module replacement possibility when receiving 1x module ageing code.

Your Rivian also has degradation they just use more of the top buffer to hide it.

Pretty much all the lithium batteries generally lose 10% in the first few years, and after that it stabilizes. You can easily have 85% SoH after even 200 000 miles.

You can look at the aging datasets of most EV's and unless they're hiding behind a buffer, you'll see a similar drop in all of them during the first few years. It's very non-linear - e.g. you can lose 10% in the first 2 years and then lose 5% in the next 8.

I decided to have a look at mine again after reading this. 2021 4S CT, just about to clock 70000 miles. With Scottish temperatures as they are now I'm seeing about 189 miles on the guessometer at 100% charge. I use it as a daily commuter and i'm about 52 miles per day round trip. It's plugged in every other night now. 82% SoH and some interesting looking peaks across the cells.

Here are the screens from car scanner if anyone is interested:

Here is my captured data for you to compare.
  • 2023 Taycan 4S - CPO
  • 19K+ miles
  • SOH versus Miles
  • I have been using the OBD/CarScanner app to record the data since 3/2024.
  • All recalls have been completed, except for ASA2, which requires replacing the front passenger seat cushion. I plan to call the dealer to check if the part is now available, as I received an updated notice this weekend.
