Replace 12v battery after n years or not?

The horror stories about dead 12v batteries gives me angst. Especially as my Taycan often sits in the garage for two weeks at a time and not plugged in. The process to get to it in a locked car and trickle charge it is way beyond my simple pay grade. So to avoid the worry would forum members recommend replacing a battery after a certain time period? Does that have to be done by Porsche?

I'm not sure what its replacement schedule is – probably depends on the wear on the battery – which is unique to each vehicles usage.

It does have to be programmed/paired to your individual VIN – so it is a Porsche Centre only thing. Its quite an expensive battery – plan for about a €/£1000 replacement cost with labour.

I personally wouldn't think you need to worry about this. The 12v issue has been addressed as it was on other brands of EVs. I've not seen a post on a 12v issue in months / this year.

If your car has had all the recall and campaign work completed then you should rest easy.

Two weeks of idle time is nothing. 6 months then there are documented procedures to follow (see owners guide).

The 12V battery is a LFP type battery and should outlast the car. No need to worry about replacing it.

I can’t answer as to replacement, but I am in the same situation you are as to the car sitting and concern about a dead 12 volt. A couple of things I would recommend to do. It is true that the HV battery will automatically recharge the 12V, but my understanding is that it will only do this about 6 times *and only if the HV is above 50% SOC*. After the 6th charge the 12V begins to drain without refills from the HV. So always park with a little over 50%. The 50% level is also recommended as the preferred state of charge for longer storage by the Owners Manual. I have had my 12V die when the car sat for 3 weeks without a trickle charger. As a precaution, I will start the car and just sit and watch the HV recharge the 12V for about 20 minutes If I know I won’t use it past the two week mark. it’ss good time to watch your dashcam videos. ? Other things— You need a special trickle charger for lithium batteries. Also, my dealer told me that to replace the battery will cost you $2,000 for a new one. It has its own computer apparently.

That was a thing when the Taycan first entered the market back in 2019/2020.
This doesn't happen anymore due to s/w updates and hardware changes.
Only in some rare occasions the 12V battery dies but that's mostly due to other components that fail.
If your car stays alive after two weeks it'll probably never dies.
I've seen cars that survive two months but I understand your concern.
ICE cars use power while standing still, just like EVs.
But only EVs have a huge HV-battery that'll charge the 12V-battery when necessary.

This is lightly off-topic, but I was reflecting on this 12v battery... Would it be created if EVs were created from scratch (i.e. there were no legacy 12v battery concept).

I think it would not exist: they would have made some low-voltage output from the main battery, and that'd be it... just a thought

How many stereos and computers of any description do you know of that run at HV battery levels of power... ?

There'd definitely be something... Whether it would be 12V is likely debatable.

oh, there is not doubt there would be some transformer... I just don't think there is really a need for a special separate energy store (i.e. battery)

Possibly.... Though they could have done that now, no? The Taycan was ground up EV.
