Hi all, took possession of my Taycan 4S in Jan 23. Very impressed with the car considering I wasn't a fan of EVs

The figures advised 280 miles on full charge with battery performance pack. In reality when I fully charge it never states more than 235 miles and in reality it probably only achieves 180 miles.

Do these figures sound off?

There are zillions threads about range, consumption, etc.

Bottom line: it depends on your foot, outside temperature, tyres and battery SoH.
Overall average is about 400km@100%SoC…or something like that.

my latest findings (after 27k km): Porsche’s math about consumption is not accurate at all.
Before winter, my total average consumption was 19.9kwh/100km.
During winter, consumption between charges was between 22-25kwh/100km, but closer to 25.
Yesterday, just noticed that total average went down to 18.8kwh/100km….

How many miles have you done so far? You might not even be using re-gen braking yet?

As above, there are numerous threads on range - 280 miles is achievable in perfect conditions. Otherwise the range will reduce, particularly if you are enjoying the performance of your new car! As the computer gets used to your driving style (and as you get used to EV driving) then I would expect range to increase, particularly as the weather warms up and your car can use re-gen braking to increase battery efficiency etc.

In addition to what @B61 wrote, parking outside overnight in cold temperatures, and making lots of short trips can reduce total range available. Air pressure in tires will also have an impact.

When maximum range is needed, park overnight in a garage (if available...preferably climate controlled), pre heat the cabin before unplugging from your power source. Ensure tire pressures are not less than specified values. Use normal or range mode, and drive efficiently.

Whatever you're getting now should improve as summer arrives. The WLTP range rating used in Europe is more liberal than the EPA range rating in the US. The upside for those of us in the US is our cars can consistently outperform expectations.

With outside air temperatures in the 80º F range now, I'm confident we could achieve 270 miles or more in our Turbo model, which is less efficient than your 4s.

Do some research. EV's are new to a lot of people, and they aren't always as intuitive as we've been used to with ICE.

First off there are two batteries - Performance Battery (PB) (standard in RWD and 4S saloon) and Performance Battery Plus (PB+) (standard on every other variant and provides the extended range).

I'm assuming you have the PB+?

Depending on time of year - best case warmer months - 15C+ ambient then 225 miles estimated on the battery display would be normal, 25C or thereabouts would likely see upwards of 250 miles estimated.

How many miles are on your car?

What are your consumption figures (more relevant than the battery estimate given it can't know how you are about to drive!) - Total Trip, (best if you have never reset it since new) is the one to look at which will provide a good average consumption figure - you should expect 3.3 miles / kWH (or better depending on driving and wheels fitted) on a car that has been bedded in for a while and less if you do only short distances and drive like you stole it.

280 miles is la-la-land IMHO as these are based on WLTP lab figures and not real world driving.

Some folk in US will get to these dizzy heights where the ambient is toasty most of the time. UK, alas, is not one of those places.

235 miles on a decent run (distance) should be your target and the consumption data averaging 3.3 miles / kwH would work out at 259 actual miles (more than the estimate).

I received my '23 4SCT in Dec and the first few months were exactly as you are experiencing. Of course it was very cold in Colorado during that time, I drive fast and don't use regen braking. I just hit 2,400 miles, the weather is warming up and the range is increasing considerably. Although, I will never come close to 280 miles on a charge and I'm OK with that. It will get better but temper your expectations.

Don't use regen braking - how do you slow down then?

Perhaps you mean overrun recuperation (throttle lift off).

Regen (recuperative) braking is always on and you can't elect not to use it.

Tesla has really programmed non-mechanically-inclined people to equate one-pedal driving with regeneration/energy recuperation.

180 total would be low unless you’re in very cold temps, but 215-240 is pretty typical. All depends on your spec and how/where you typically drive.

I’ve got a 4S with every performance option, 21” mission e’s, and drive like a nutter. Worst I’ve seen is 210; best 235.

So what is the size of the usable battery ? I know gross it's 93.7 kwh.

83.7 net (90%)

93.4 gross.
So at 3.3 KwH/mile wouldn't that be 276 miles? Do you find 3.3 Kwh realistic or do you have to try quite hard to achieve that? Why is there such large buffer between gross and usable? I have an i4 and very nearly ordered a taycan but really needed a hatch but with ST available I am very tempted. The shape of the Taycan is really quite special. I do quite long trips and recent journey BMW managed 250 miles relatively easily from about 91%.

259 based on net capacity.

3.3 was my average over 20,535 miles in a 4S PB+ 20" wheels.

I didn't try hard at all but it took a while for range to build.

Thats really very interesting and thank you for the numbers and answering all my questions it's very helpful. I'm looking at a ST PB+ RWD on 21" wheels but might swap these out for 20" or even 19" for potholes and range especially in winter.

Take a look at the range calculator on the Taycan website and punch in your wheel size, typical driving and temp as this will help too
