Howdy all. 2022 4S here, bought CPO a couple months ago. Love it - but it has one annoying habit.

Sometimes when I am in reverse the car will slam on the brakes suddenly for no apparent reason. It's usually when I am creeping backwards out of a driveway or a parking place. It feels like I've hit something when it happens, but it's just the brake slamming on for a reasons I cannot determine. Very startling...

There is no associated warning sound or proximity alert that accompanies this behavior. I would understand if the car thought I was backing into something, but that doesn't seem to be the situation.

Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas why it does this?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Yes, I have had the same experience when backing out of my garage. However, I prefer to leave the sensor on to avoid hitting any objects I might not see. When entering or exiting the garage, I keep my left and right side mirrors closed due to the tight space.

You do have the option to disable the object sensor feature while reversing (parking).

It could be the Rear Cross Traffic Alert system, it comes on very suddenly using the brakes if it thinks something has the potential to hit you when reversing out of a parking space/drive. It detects things before you can in most cases, but sometimes it detects things too far away that are not likely to be a risk. It also briefly flashes a red arrow in the reverse camera screen, but if you are looking in your mirror or over a shoulder you can easily miss it.

I have a 2022 CT 4 and just experienced this for the first time yesterday. We were in a parking lot, quite rainy and I was backing out very slowly looking at the screen and the car suddenly stopped. I thought I had hit something on the ground that I couldn't see. Went forward then back again and the same thing happened. I got out of the car and of course there was nothing there and no cars coming in either direction. I tried a third time doing nothing different and this time backed up normally. No idea why.??

Did you have your seat belt fastened? My previous car, a 2017 Tesla MS, did this when I first got it. I finally figured out that if I didn't have my seat belt fastened and lifted myself up off the seat while reversing (to turn and look behind me), the car thought the driver seat was empty and immediately stopped. As long as my seat belt was fastened, it knew I was there and let me do my thing. I haven't had similar issues with the Taycan but I think maybe it's just because the Tesla got me trained to always put my seat belt on first. Anyway, this is just something for you to consider/try. I don't know if it will resolve your issues.

Disable Maneuvering Assist in the assists menu.

From the owners manual

Maneuvering Assist uses sensors to monitor the area behind and to the sides of the vehicle. If static obstacles are detected, the system can brake the vehicle to a standstill.
The system is available subject to the following prerequisites:
  • Transmission range R selected.
  • The symbol is active on the screen (symbol lights up white).
  • The vehicle speed is max. 5 mph (10 km/h).

Happens to me virtually every time I back out of my garage. My garage apron has about a 4-6 inch drop so the sensors are angled downwards towards the ground as I go over it. And that's when it typically happens. Very frustrating. Never happened with my Model S which has the same safety features.

Use the Lift function and programme it to remember the location: the car panics when you reverse off the drive onto a cambered road

I had my seat belt on so that not the issue. I’ve had the car for over 3 years and that sudden braking had never happened before.

My 2025 CT started doing this last month out of no where. I just make sure the assist is off when I back up but sometimes it turns back on by itself.

Tap the rear collision icon on the park assist screen (turns blue) to disable during reversing - only active when reversing.

I do this ever day when reversing out of my garage to avoid this issue.

I get this but assumed it’s due to a slight slope in my driveway. At slow speeds the car can pick up a small slide in the opposite direction and activate the hill hold function.
