Vehicle limiting charging speed

Charging today at a newly installed Osprey station. It worked first time using the porsche charge card, so that was a plus. 8 fast chargers with only one other being used.

It said it had a maximum of 300 kw for an 800v car on the display screen (150 kw for 400v), which is a layer of information i've not seen provided before.

Anyway the maximum speed i was able to charge at was 134 kwh, with battery at 50% and battery temperature at 36c. I noticed a graphic on the EVSE popped up when the speed hit around 120kwh shortly after i'd plugged it in, which seems to imply that the car was limiting the supply speed. I don't have the 150kw dc charger thingy, so car must have been using 800v to get over 50 kwh. So I was a bit surprised about why the car would limit the rate - if that's what was actually happening.

Anyone else seen this?

It looks to me the charging curve caused it, remember the lower SoC you roll in with, the better performance you'll see.

Arrived with about 40% and left with about 60%. I’d have thought that would be the sweet spot.

I think that charging curve was improved in the big update?

There was a charge test published in the US as below. The guy that did it is a very experienced EV tester.

Looking at this graph, there could have been more power at 40% charge, if the battery was well prepared. 36 degrees C could be on the lower side IME. I normally get 41 C fully heated.

It seems my car likes Derek's graph better!

As for temperature, it was about 25c when i got to the charger, so i imagine that is partly to blame

One of the fun things about those Kempower chargers, is anyone can open the QR code to see your charging session!

What you can also tell from that graph is how long it takes me to order and eat a Mighty McMuffin.

I suspect the car wasn't the issue and more to do with the EVSE array and how available power may be shared - load balancing. Power curve will ultimately influence as indicated above

These units must be 800v to deliver 300kW.

It was definitely 800v

Hi I've recently ordered my Taycan not releasing the 150Kw upgrade option for faster charging,
is this your issue. i didnt think it could charge over 50Kwh unless you have the upgrade

The 150kw onboard charger allows for faster speeds on 400v machines. Aka older fast chargers and more importantly the Tesla network. So if u can option it still then do. Wish I had.

My SA (who I liked and was otherwise very good) said you didn’t really need it. I forget why, but basically put it down to a petrol car guy not knowing much about EV. I did get the 22kw AV unit though. I’ve had that replaced more times than I’ve used it.

I don’t do a vast amount of charging away from home. But as I understand it, nearly all of the new fast dc units going in are 800v.
The slight pain is if there are a choice of 2 or 3 150kw chargers near by, you can’t tell which is an 800v one until you try it and see your charge speed.
Big problem is slow access to Tesla network as it opens up I guess.
