Copy is just a copy.
I recall when that was said about the Japanese motorbikes. The Japanese watched the Isle of Man race with the British Triumph, Norton and BSA powerful bikes.

And said we can do better than that!

Everybody laughed at the beginning at the Japanese bikes that came in at a much lower price!

Where are Triumph, BSA and Norton today??

So I will not dismiss the Chinese cars. They may be learning about the European market at the moment and will adapt and improve. It will need a lot of courage and determination to get the western car industry to shape up. No more POET’s Day on Friday ( Piss off Early, Tomorrow is Saturday)!

OP:"So - what do folks think is the closed EV alternative to the Taycan? I'm looking for a similar mix of driving experience/performance and prestige."

Xiaomi has no prestige even between phones.
If you want a Taycan alternative with prestige to spare, go for fully loaded Rimac Nevera.

Iin this case, maybe a moderately equipped is also good enough.

Without reading 7 pages of this thread, has anyone suggested a Lucid Air Grand Touring? It's bigger, with WAY BETTER packaging, great straight line performance, great range. Thoughts?

Lucid owners are a hearty bunch - dealing with way way way more problems than Taycan owners…the software is an utter "sh*t show" - build quality highly variable, service is difficult and slow, and some problems still don't have fixes…

just _ONE_ example - a neighbor of mine owns a lucid air - he and his wife carry around extra FOB batteries with them _EVERYWHERE_ in case the FOB battery dies while they are away from the car and need to unlock it - the FOB apparently can't sleep/idle effectively and gets stuck in loops and can drain a battery in less than hour - park your Lucid, get out, have some lunch, come back and your FOB battery is completely dead and you can't unlock the car…unless you have a battery in your pocket/purse…

Lucid is not a solution and it's styling is hideous - also the only one that comes close to Taycan level driveablility is the Saphire - and it's $250k

Fun fact: It's about as heavy as the Taycan...
Yes, and the new RS6 will be 2.9 V6 + 2x e-machines as well, because it's also PPC.
So the V8 is gone and it will be even heavier than the RS5.

These plug in hybrids have the double the complexity and have now more weight than the BEV's... pretty pointless IMO.

Just go BEV or go ICE (with mild hybrid if it has to be). But not this stuff with 20-30kWh batteries...

The very argument I've been raising for a long time. It's incredible how they've brainwashed people to buy into a compromised package purely through fearmongering.

I wonder how these high performance turbo PHEVs will hold up long term. I feel like either the engine is going to be spending a lot of time running cold or you're gimped on power running the battery a lot unless your commutes are long. Or you could crank the engine up right at the start, in which case you'd lose a lot of efficiency by foregoing the hybrid system.

Like on paper it sounds great, but in practice I'd personally be thinking about oil temps and engine wear or trying to avoid using gas entirely for a short trip.

Best to let the ECU and designers worry about all that and just drive the thing
