I've been told I need to put the 12v lithium battery on a trickle charger when the car sits for periods longer than 2 weeks. I'm very annoyed that I can keep the main battery charged with a charging schedule but Porsche has made no accommodation to have an external plug to connect a trickle charger and instead require the owner to open the front hood to connect a charger which should have been engineered to get it's maintenance charge from the main battery. Seems quite ignorant engineering if this is the case for a luxury EV. Normal ICE cars don't drain the starting battery in a few weeks unless you have aftermarket accessories like alarm systems installed.
My 2000 Boxster used a Porsche trickle charger plugged into the cigarette lighter socket but I'm told this is not an option for the Taycan since Porsche advises against trickle charging the 12v battery via the cigarette lighter socket.

This was the advice given some time ago. Not sure how this now would be reduced to 1 week.

There has been a lot of discussions on here about the way the Taycan charges the 12 volt battery and the cycles. But leabing the car for 1 week should not cause any issues whatsoever!

I left the car sitting for 6 weeks the most, no issues whatsoever starting it back up (except the severe pain and suffering I endured from driving a much crappier ICE car during that time).

the big battery can do does charge the 12V battery while the car is left unattended - Porsche's advice is to leave the car plugged in when left for extended periods of time (great than 20 day's idle is a good rule of thumb) - that way the big battery can be charged if necessary…

EV's are not like an normal gas car - the big battery has plenty of juice to keep the little 12V battery topped off - the only issue is if the big battery gets too low it will not charge the little battery to keep itself in good condition - but that's only once the big battery is below 10% SOC…

for anything less than a month I wouldn't worry about - and if you leave it plugged in - it's even less of an issue.

when I leave my Taycan behind I tend to drive a much crappier rental EV - a Model 3/Y when I can - they in my opinion are better cars than 90% of what a rental car company will provide as a gas car rental.

not as good as my Taycan - but wow sooooo much better than a nissan altra or some other POS sedan.

What you were told is wrong.
In a polite and respectful manner, I believe you meant to say, "I appreciate your perspective, but I believe there might be a misunderstanding here. Based on the information I have, it seems that [provide the correct information]. I'm open to discussing this further and finding common ground if needed." This approach conveys your point while maintaining a cooperative and non-confrontational tone.

This is according to my close personal colleague, ChatGDP.

Is the Porsche Taycan equipped with a 12-volt Lithium-Ion battery? According to your attachment info.

Thanks, I'm finding more and more alarming information about the charging system for the main battery and why they want you to only charge at a minimum 8a with the Porsche 120v charger in your garage. Evidently if you charge at less than 8a it will damage cells in the main battery reducing range but still posing a significant risk of fire due to the cheap on board charger in the Taycan which is still used in all models including the 2021 I just purchased. I'm losing confidence in Porsche as an elite car company.

I'm told the 12v lithium ion battery is used to run the electronics on the car. If this battery dies then the car is dead.
Pretty silly that an EV with a 74kW main battery must rely on a single 12v battery for its brain with no backup to the main battery which would only require a DC to DC voltage converter. Instead they make you use a trickle charger if you are going to let it sit for a week or two.

Many posts/threads on this forum advising Taycan owners in NA not to use Porsche branded EVSEs for home charging. https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/t...uide-to-the-porsche-evse-pmc-pmcc-pwcc.13886/

You really don’t need to. There were issues with earlier cars but it’s been adequately resolved through subsequent updates and in production. I’ve let my car sit untethered to anything while we were away over summer with absolutely no issue ?

The software in the car monitors the SoC of the little 12V battery and kicks in a recharge cycle via the main traction battery if and when required. I can parlay all the nitty gritty, but that’s all you need to know at a high level.

Thanks for the input. I'm going back to the Porsche dealer on Monday to try to get some answers. The fire risk on the main battery due to the cheap battery management charger still used in the Taycan is a big concern.
