My Taycan has the Thermally & Noise Insulated Glass. Been battling some health issues so I’ve only put 175 miles on the car since taking possession late October. But the few times I‘ve driven the car there seems to be more road noise than expected.

Has anyone else with Thermally & Noise Insulated Glass experienced a lot of road noise or are my expectations for a very quiet interior ride too high?

Perhaps the most significant aspect of an EV people forget, and in particular for the Taycan and when you've ordered the Thermal/Noise insulated glass, is that you simply now hear the road noise from your tires that previously were drowned out by the engine noise (now if not your first EV then this may not apply!) - hence they seem a lot louder than expected. If you can detach from that for a moment and consider the overall noise intrusion in the cabin, do you still feel the interior is loud or louder than your ICE car?

Of course the other aspect is wheel size and tires you are running - often for example All Seasons can be quite loud compared to others. The Pirelli Summer Perf. tires I run (on 21") I find are super quite and very happy with them.

I also have a '23 GTS with the insulated glass option, so apples to apples (except maybe the tires. 20" with summer Pirelli). The car is very quiet overall. My, subjective, impression is that the Taycan is as quiet as the brother-in-law's MB S550 and slightly quieter than my now departed Tesla S. On a smooth road the car is extremely quiet with almost no wind or road noise. However, on both EV cars textured road surfaces (old deteriorating blacktop or cement) seem to generate a lot of road/tire noise. Possibly skimping on some noise insulation to save weight? Probably because there are no other noises to help mask the road noise.

Find a nice smooth road and you will be impressed by how quiet the car can be.

@ciaranob… this is my first EV and it has the factory all season 21s…. what you have stated about the engine noise drowning out road noise from tires makes sense…

Thanks.…

@gtm… thanks.. the road conditions were probably an additional factor to the road noise. As stated, I’m battling some health issues and haven’t had the opportunity to take it out…. drove it home on delivery/acceptance day then a week later drove it to the shop for PPF and once finished drove it back home… been in the garage every since… :(

Concentrate on getting yourself better. The car is just a little added incentive. A seriously great driving car and plenty quiet.

Any road noise transmitted to the cabin from the tyres down the suspension into the car structure will be unaffected by the glass choice, and I suspect that is the bulk of the road noise.

It will reduce any road noise bouncing of walls and tunnels back at the car but I can think of no mechanism by which it could make a difference to structure borne noise.

Luxury cars usually have rubber mounted suspension connected to a flexibly mounted subframe for low noise, but you won't get Porsche levels of response and handling this way.

Road noise comes from the floor / ground / tyres / footwell and logically the windows won't reduce this. Passing traffic will be quieter.

One reason why I didn't option this on my car.

I have 4 CT with insulated glass. Like mentioned above the road makes the difference. Smooth Dutch highways are really quiet. Some local Belgian roads give an annoying sound. For non road noise the windows do make a difference.

I may considere EV specific tires with foam inside the next time.

one thing the insulated windshield has a yellowish color that is visible from outside. The rear tinded windows look a bit milky black in the sun (don’t know if it is the insulation or on all taycans)

Presumably this is where air suspension scores a win over coilovers as road vibration and tyre noise is de-coupled from the chassis to some extent?

I’m quite impressed with how quiet my car is with noise insulated glass but that’s coming from a Nissan GT-R with catless exhaust:CWL:

The summer Goodyear tires on the 21 are super noisy. Switching to 20 inches made a huge difference.

This is great advice, and @W1NGE too. Insulated glass is the one option I was thinking I should have added and would add on the next one, but the posts above make perfect sense. Money saved off the next car (long time yet, only had this one 6 months!)

I was aware of structure borne noise, I was a noise and vibration researcher befor going into Formula 1, but still chose to spec the noise reduction glass for other noise.
I was looking for a quiet comfortable car with a good turn of speed and room for my dog. Even if it is only a small contribution it is worth it for me.

Everyone has their take but in my back to back comparison of both glass types driving the exact same route (50 miles each way), I experienced a definite and very noticeable improvement in sound deadening in respect the overall noise level entering the cabin - its not just tire/undercarriage noise.
