Which is the biggest reason why this is so feckin insane!!Just to make it clear. It is not only about the sound but the shifting feel. It will simulate the shifts by an 'interrupted" pull on upshifts and engine brake under downshift, mimicking how the PDK works. Testers as Andreas Preuninger (head of GT development) said it is almost impossible to make a diff between real PDK and future "fake shift Taycan". The final stages of the developments were made by the team who tuned the PDK system as well to make the feel as close as possible.
This will need serious software mods, not only the sound and paddles on the steering wheel.
As a firmware developer I had to laugh a bit hereDon't compare the script kiddies doing the PCM app to the firmware engineers!
I personally think it is very gimmicky and part of the reason I changed over both our cars to electric was the drivetrain 'feel', but I am totally fine with whatever gimmicks need to be implemented to get people out of gar/petrol cars and into electric ones.Which is the biggest reason why this is so feckin insane!!
Why was PDK invented? Yup, to absolutely minimise the interruption when changing gears, to improve performance.
They now have a drivetrain that reduces it to zero....(certainly if they went with a single gear...but minimises it regardless) and so what do they waste effort on? Implementing something that makes performance worse!
The marketing people need shooting.
The quote prj pulled out about horse shit hits the nail on the head. Porsche are pandering to people who still want to push toy cars around going brrrrrr, brrrrrr, brrrr...
I disagree with the notion that these updates means Porsche is still serious about the Taycan. To me, it says the opposite.
I was reading a few threads yesterday (many of the replies were years old, many were newer) with responses stating how they miss the sounds/feel of gas engines after buying a Taycan. I almost made a thread to discuss it, but I didn't. So I'll say a tiny part of what I've been thinking here.I'm surprised they are not fitting the EV with skinny tires - improve range and "engagement". I recently spent a week in a some ICE rental (it was a Chevy something, I don't recall exactly), which came with skinny tires, I was able to easily drift it on highway ramps when it rained (despite traction control being on). That thing would start skidding through turns at 25mph! I had some fun with it (and once unintentionally scared some coworkers riding along), so I guess it was more "engaging", but I would not buy a Taycan if it handled like that. Yes, I can drift the Taycan on some ramps, but it takes rain, at least partially disabled traction control, ramp going up-hill, and usually faster than 25mph.
Go-Karts are also very engaging, 40mph feels very fast.
PS> I think the sound is meant for status symbol seekers, you know, the people for whom advertising like "when you start your car, the whole neighbourhood knows you're going for a drive" works. I on the other hand. really enjoy the awesome but silent power of an EV.
