I am assuming this will basically act as normal car key; being able to open your boot/frunk/lock/unlock/close windows.

If not, and it's just another interface for the lock/unlock button in the porsche app that hardly ever works, then it's just wasted development time.

I'd much rather they focus on releasing apple car play ultra
Or better yet releasing software so I can charge my car up fully!

Not necesarly. You always take your phone with you, always. Do you ever go somewhere with your car without having your phone with you?

With this feature, it would be 1 less thing to bring with you/carry in your pocket. You could stop carrying the keyfob, and just have the phone you would have had with you anyway - assuming porsche implements it fully, like other manufacturers, and not just some half assed shitty midway solution.

Now, is it something we desperately needed? Nah... again, i'd much rather get carplay ultra to finally rid myself of the shitty PCM.
We were at a wedding, and a guy at our table was filming with his phone and drained the battery so he couldn't get the door open to his tesla. I guess he didn't carry the key card, but the point is you still need to carry something as a backup for something like this.

Pretty sure I would never rely on Apple Wallet key for my transportation. Think of how many glitches happen on the iPhone let alone all the complaining on this forum about how the Porsche PCM is also dogshit. You would still have to always carry your key or risk getting stranded somewhere because your car account randomly reset, etc.

He didn't know, that Teslas can be unlocked at designated locations (depending on the model), even with a dead phone. FE at the B-pillar door-sill.

But no such option with the Taycan so you'll need the keyfob with you.

My previous car had Ford's first implementation of Car-as-a-Key solution (I think they wanted to copy Tesla). It was bluetooth-based and required the Ford app running in the background. Eventually they got it dialed in, but initially it would only work 1/2 the time (or less). People reported different levels of success based on iPhone model, and iOS version.
So considering the above, and based on how reliable my PCM is currently, I'm not planning to abandon the FOB anytime soon. It takes ~30 seconds sometimes for the PCM to initiate a CarPlay session -- who is gonna want to sit for 30-seconds while the car "recognizes" the phone key?

Depends if Taycan has a NFC receiver and where it is; if it does, it could be an option. And for Apple wallet to work, a NFC receiver is needed, so the question is again about where it is, in which case it could work .

As for backup for the phone that magically discharges all the time and people keep it discharged and don’t charge right away, there is also Apple Watch with wallet and 3 days battery; iPad and preatty much any Apple device from the last 2-3 years.

For some people it would be a good feature, especially for people that don’t forget to charge their phone.

Same arguments were given when Apple wallet released: “what would you ever do if your phone discahrges and you don’t have your wallet with 17 credit cards on you? “. Many people made it work

It’s very convenient. My wife has a Tesla and because you always carry your phone, there no looking for your key. It’s a small thing but really easier. The car still knows who’s driving it. The Tesla (and my M850) then lock the car when you leave. I wish Porsche had that feature.
It should be part of the Porsche app.
The walk-away lock is one feature I miss from my Tesla.

iPhones can use wallet for about 5 to 8 hours on dead battery - so in this case CarKey would work. iOS keeps a small bit of battery in reserve when it shuts down the phone due to no energy to ensure transit cards, CarKey and FindMy continues to work.

Actually, you can see the "Mobile Key" item in PIWIS, but it's in a deactivated state, so its purpose is unclear.

Porsche could do walk-away lock without phone-as-key.
The Macan EV with Comfort Access has it - no need to turn off power, just get out with say CarPlay playing and shut the door & walk. Car shut down, park selected

Approach the car, CarPlay starts and power on as you open the door, buckle seat belt and drive away. Works every time.

It also memorizes which key was used and changes the profile/user in PCM, based on which key is approaching the car.
