Because in my own experience, it is absolutely necessary, otherwise you get a display like the one posted above with stuff greyed out or missing completely.

You are right. Just found this Q&A on the Porsche website which says Porsche Connect service is required for OTA updates.

There was a time that you could activate OTA updates through the web portal (not the app).
I checked the website under MyPorsche but this has been changed apparently cuz I can't find it anymore.

It is likely you do have Porsche Connect Care, which was included for 10 years for pre 2025 Taycans.
Online Porsche says Porsche Connect Care includes vehicle software updates, among other things.

I would suspect it's a simple case of features not being turned off after Porsche Connect sub expires, at least for a while, which has been reported several times on this forum, included by @Dee himself when he did an experiment with this recently I believe.
This hypotesis would be support also by the fact that @dnigrin seems to have activated all the other options also, despite not having the sub active; which should definitely not be the case.

You might have looked at my screenshots a bit too quickly; several options are greyed out, because of my lack of a Connect subscription

I have the "online software update", I have no full connect but do have connect care, as that was included for 10 years.
For now it says there are no updates for my system.
I have disabled the privacy-mode for now.

This is interesting! I just activated the Porsche Connect Care and now the online software update tab does appear in the app!

I have it enabled but at the bottom it says "an internet connection in the vehicle is required for downloading"... anyone know how to ensure I have an internet connection in the vehicle?

MyPorsche app for my 2022 shows I have two separate products: Porsche Connect (I paid for a year) and Porsche Connect Care (good for car's first 10 years).

I have no idea what is actually necessary for OTA updates. Couple years ago Porsche US emailed I needed to set (opt-in) online privacy (not PCM) to allow all to get OTA updates. I never did that and I still get OTA updates.

Taycan owners don't really know what is required for OTA updates and neither does Porsche.
