So I ate a large rock on the interstate on my first road trip in this car. Windshield crack is about the size of a half-dollar and has grown evvvveerrrr so slightly in the last 10 days. I initially attempted the SafeLite repair option with my insurer both as it was $0 and to immediately stop any further spidering/delamination til I could sort out a full replacement. SafeLite won't touch it (and the tech was a bit of a dick). Cool, thanks SafeLite, thanks insurer.

I got a quote from the closest Porsche dealer I trust of about $3,500 to replace, and it's with my insurance now to see if they will cover it. There are some local glass shops that participate in my insurer's program, that I'd really like to avoid - no idea on their ability to properly repair, etc. I guess I am wondering if $3,500 is about right for replacement and recalibrating, or if I should just go with the best approved local shop with good reviews.

edit - I am in Georgia, US

I have seen numbers this high in other threads, so it sounds about right. Are you in the US? You can get windshield warranty separately in some states.

Yep, edited the first post - I am in GA, US. Unfortunately GA doesn't mandate free windshield replacement from insurers like some other states but I do have comp - I will just be out my $1k deductible (plus ~$200 to re-tint the visor strip, ugh)

I’m in Texas, and my deductible is $500 but I did purchase windshield warranty when I got the vehicle in Dec 2025 so that’s 2 opportunities to not have to pay the full amount either.

I just had my windshield replaced last week. Safelite came to the house, put in the new glass and re-calibrated the cameras. I was very impressed with his skills and left him good reviews. It took him 2 hours and he had a laptop he hooked up to the car to calibrate things. I'm not sure why Safelite said they won't work on the car. Almost all modern cars have the same type of cameras in the windshield. I have a rider on my insurance that only genuine Porsche parts can be used so it came to $3800 and I just paid my deductible. The glass alone was $3100 and I have heads up display. I asked the tech how much aftermarket glass would have been and he said about 1k less.

I’ve had experience replacing a windshield. Mine was also hit by a rock kicked up by the car in front while driving on the highway.
The total replacement cost—including materials and labor—came to NT$120,000 (approximately USD $3,700–$3,800).

If Safelite cannot fix it, they have a warranty service as well. After 3 attempts in my MB GLE, I took it to the MB dealership and Safelite covet the fix as it was them (Safelite) who my insurance was working with/ through. They had to replace with OEM windshield which they didn’t have so off to the MB dealership I went. The short of it was that, I didn’t pay a dime more than my $100 USAA deductible. Started off Safelite, somehow ended up at the MB dealership, and through coordination it was all handled. Now that I think of it, it was no different than any other accident claim

Re-reading the post, I think Safelite said they wouldn't drill/fill this windshield while a replacement was obtained. That seems reasonable as the damage is severe. Where I live the state uses large gravel in winter on the highway that results in many cracked windshields, so I've dealt with windshield repair guys probably 10 times. They have a maximum damage guideline beyond which they will not attempt repair.

I'm at about half your lifetime tally, but similar experience with repair vs replacement: whenever I've thought that repair might be a feasible for a relatively small and stable crack, the inspector upon examination has always deemed it too large to repair, and hence replacement.
(In my state, the default is a $0 glass deductible for car insurance, so perhaps some warped incentives going on here.)

Safelite came to the house, put in the new glass and re-calibrated the cameras.
This sure seems like a pleasant surprise. Pre-ADAS, I had some windshields replaced at my house.
But ever since then, Safelite had me to come to the shop to recalibrate the ADAS -- this was for VW Arteon and Audi A6ar.
IIRC, various posters have claimed that something about the Taycan is somewhat so different that Safelite can't recalibrate at their own shops, and hence a visit to a Porsche dealer is necessary.
So being able to recalibrate anywhere is a surprise (even if a pleasant one for a change).

Just happened to me too. My Porsche dealer did the replacement for a cost of $3840. This included a wheel alignment of $590. I was told that Porsche required that prior to the calibration of the safety systems and cameras.

My State Farm reimbursement was $3,595, but that was after I sent them the additional bill for the alignment which wasn't on the original quote.

While the glass looks great in normal light, and appears defect free, I think I see some very small imperfections in the glass (almost like micro-pits) when the sun is coming directly through the window into my face.

I've cleaned the class in and out and am monitoring it. I also informed my SA and told her that if it doesn't go away at some point I'm bringing it in to have them look at it. There is no way it is visible unless in direct sunlight, and this is Seattle and so the timing has to be right (e.g., sunset, car pointed to the West, bright sunlight). I haven't yet had that situation where I can run right over to the dealer so we can look through the glass together.

Has anyone else ever experienced this with Porsche windshield glass?

My factory glass is like this. Either it pits really easily (my guess) or it's just how it is.

For clarity, the micro-pits appear to be there from the factory. I noticed it on the very first day after leaving the shop.

However, I do agree that Porsche Glass seems to pit very easily from road debris and sand and such.

I'm in Alpharetta, GA. This happened to me. I used the same company recommended by Hennessy Porsche called Atlanta Glass Services. It was $2700. I paid cash since I have a high deductible. Call (404) 597-2561, ask for Camie. They came to our home, and the repair was perfect.
