J2 GTS Standard LED Matrix vs HD Matrix? Differences

Any thoughts on the stock MATRIX LED lights that are standard on a J2 GTS vs the optional HD Matrix ones?


How do the Matrix LED lights in a J2 taycan compare to the standard ones in the J1 Taycan? (Exclusive Matrix LED headlights in black, with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus)

just to add, I have a J1 Taycan GTS with stock lights and they still blow me away. At the time however, I don't recall light upgrades at the time

I do not think this information is correct.
The matrix lights on both J1.1 and J1.2 have 11 segments in the high beam zone that can be dimmed.
If you have driven the Taycan in the dark, you will see that quite clearly. In total there are 84 adjustable pixels in each light. It then has to group them together so that the light from the left and right headlight overlaps, this is why 11 segments are made, the rest of the resolution in the light is used to line up the 11 segments.
I am sure the 11 segments are also due to the DSP having limited capability. It is tracking the 11 segments and dimming each segment as needed.

The HD matrix lights have 32000 individually adjustable pixels, and a much larger amount of segments.
This allows the dimming to be much tighter.

Yes, they are standard.
As an option you can get the HD Matrix lights, which have higher resolution.

Yes that's true. In J1.2 the matrix is standard and HD Matrix is extra.

HD matrix on the J1.2 are another level up from the Matrix PDSL plus on J1.1. I was really surprised given how good the top spec J1.1 lights were. The J1.2 system is just superb, the distance they can illuminate, the 32000 LEDs are so accurate, smooth and fast reacting, the 'magic carpet' illumination of your lane on motorways is a nice trick etc. Each headlight assembly has 4x different projector types that enable all the tricks.

Yeah, I really envy the HD Matrix Headlights.
No matter how good the J1’s Matrix LED headlights are, they’re still based on the older matrix technology.
Just by looking at the lighting zones, you can easily tell the difference between the J1.2 and the J1 versions.


If possible, I’d love to retrofit or upgrade mine to the J1.2 HD Matrix Headlights.

Discussed this option at length with from my SA, that even in the U.S. where the $1,770 full Matrix LED option capability is not present as it is in many other parts of the world, that getting it will greatly improve night driving safety due to the HD Matrix optional ones being much brighter. He lives down a 30 mile curvy country road and with his ability to drive demonstrators, some with and some without that option, knows first hand how much the expensive HD Maxtrix ones are better here.

Could just take one deer or other night collision to make choosing it a smart option…

I second that opinion. These clusters are on another level, beam forming looks almost magical, magic carpet is a very nifty feature, the whole makes for a very special driving experience at night.

Is there no way to unlock it in the US? We've got tunes for the 4s taking it up to turbo S levels, and I was able to add PTV to my 981 in <30 with PIWIS.
