Hi everyone,

I've been trying to find similar cases in this forum, but all I can find is 12v dead battery issues.

MY 2023 GTS was showing a 12 battery low message when starting (Never seen that before), started driving and a few minutes later it started to smell to burn electrical wires?

Pulled over, opened the bonnet and found smoke coming out from the 12V battery area.

It appeared coming form the positive terminal and the plastic cover from the charging pin was melted. Called for a tow and back to OPC it went.

Still waiting on a diagnostic but wondering if anyone had anything similar before?

Thanks.

Hold on to your wallet. The 12 volt battery may live outside any known warranties if they want to replace it. Good luck.

This is the reason why on every one of my customers cars whenever the 12V factory battery starts acting up we convert to AGM. Taycan does not need at all a LiFePo4 battery. AGM does as good of a job.

This LiFePo4 made by A123System is an absolute piece of *****. I've had three of them ignite at my shop (outside the car obviously) and they are known to have caused several Taycans to burn down across the globe. Probably why A123Systems is bankrupt and gone!

AGM ftw!

Probably that battery is slowly shorting internally causing extra resistance and overheating everything around it including itself and the wires!

Has the issue been resolved for the newer year models?

Not sure why it’s ok to replace a Lithium battery with an AGM when @ct14garage complains about replacing an an amp as being “Redneck” and voiding the warranty. An AGM battery will void the warranty in Taycan everytime without question. Also if he has 3 of them catch fire in his garage it seems it is his issue not being able to correctly handle lithium batteries otherwise they would have caught fire before they got to his garage. And on other thing thing A123 declared bankruptcy about 10 years before the Taycan was even made.

Some updates...

12 V battery seems ok according to tech in OPC, however what caused the wire connected to the positive charging stud to heat up and burn the plastic is still unknown.

The tech did say that unsecured and not properly tighten wire could be a possibility, however he also suspects chafing of the wire possibly caused by rodents?

For some background, the car was parked outdoors at the Porsche center for nearly 1 month waiting on a new 22kw OBC, received the car on a Friday and the following Monday the car was back.

Should be a week waiting on new wire, plastic cap and the black cover that has some fuses? Not sure on this…

Hope to have it back in a week.

No, it won't. I have a customer in Canada who installed an AGM before he even met me and just had the HV booster replaced at the Porsche dealer under warranty.

Second, I never said it wasn't my fault. Obviously in the past we tried charging dead batteries and bringing them back to life. On 3 occasions they caught on fire. Didn't say it wasn't my fault but the fact that a battery can catch fire so easily is not very reassuring to me. Specially when it's installed in a Taycan and there's already cases in Malaysia and China of Taycan being burned down by fire from 12V LiFePo4.

So chill your crack will you

PS: Regarding the DSP I never said it would void the entire car warranty, but said it very clearly that it would void the warranty of parts they've modified (ie, PCM, speakers etc...)
If you wanna play the smartass it seems to me you need to up your intelligence and reading comprehension a little bit :)

That would be the first thing to check.. see if any of the attachments are loose. That would cause high resistance and high heat when the car tries to charge the battery or demand current from it.

It could even be a bad crimp where the wire came loose from the connector.

Rodents would likely eat the insulation, but not the wire itself. That should have obvious tell-tale damage, probably to other wires too.
