I had my car in service in Miami for a different issue and they replaced the cable.

it’s not getting hot anymore

32mm.webp

Can it really be 32mm2 from this print? That's a 3 or 2 AWG equivalent ? A big upgrade from 10AWG.
if correct this is excellent - thermal sensor (should have always had it) _AND_ more appropriate gauge wire which will make it run cooler @ 9.6 kW…

if we have 8/6 gauge wire this is a nice improvement over the all 10 AWG power supply cables - good job (if true)…

it certainlly looks thicker vs. the hand in these pictures.

Doesn't this recall downrate the AC charging speed? Or am I mistaken?

I see the following:

3C8AWG(8)
4C22AWG

3C8AWG - I decode this to: 3 conductors (120V hot, 120V hot, ground) 8 AWG wire vs. 10 AWG in the previous cable - 8 AWG is a _MUCH_ better choice for 9.6/40 amp/240V loads - should run much much cooler

_KUDOS_ to Porsche for stepping up and finally shipping a cable that should not experience a 100F delta above ambient temp for nominal operation - this cable should run much cooler!!!!

4C22AWG- I decode this to: 4 conductors (low voltage) communication - this is probably for the thermal sensor(s) and other communcation so that the PMC+/PMCC can identify the cable as a 30/50 amp cable - basically there are 4 wires for control/communication/sensors

8 AWG wire confirmed in the new cable is a welcome improvement vs. just adding a thermal sensor but keeping the 10 AWG wire which was the cause of the high nominal operating temperature to begin with…this is good news!!!

3C8AWG - I decode this to: 3 conductors (120V hot, 120V hot, ground)
Ground is usually smaller than hots. This could be neutral (in a properly installed NEMA 14-50 the 3 large wires would be L1/L2/N) but it still puzzles me, why would this EVSE need either ground or neutral to be this large for NEMA 14-50? Most Level 2 EVSE don’t even have neutral for 240V.

I agree about the ground - but I'm guessing porsche just went with all 3 wires being 8 AWG to avoid any problems - the previous cable has no neutral - so it would be hard for me imagine they "added" a neutral, and kept the ground which _IS_ required, and then didn't list it on the outside of the cable...

in my mind the simpler explanation is that they just made all 3 wires 8 AWG and called it a day.

but that is entirely speculation until someone slices open one of these things to see - but given their cost I don't see/want that to happen any time soon.

You are correct, ground is required. It also cannot be AWG22 for AWG8 L1/2. Given there don't appear be other conductors listed, you're probably right that they speced ground to be AWG8. Perhaps adding another gauge wire would make it more expensive than using an over-spec gauge, or maybe the oversized ground helps with heat dissipation.

I hate this new cable. Charging time have increased. Before I was doing 10% per hour, now it does 14% in 2 hours. So at least 30% degradation.

This cable is stupid. I have a $150 charger that does 7.5kwh and does not heat up.

Instead of % per hour, what was the charging rate it's showing you on car while charging? Also, does it show 100% or 50% on the PMC+?
