SUMMER tire question...

My 4s came with summer tires. No one knows how - all the docs say they're all-season

they're not

Porsche is offering to buy me all seasons and put them on the 21" mission-e wheels

BUT i've had them for 6 months and I'M A FAN. first REAL sports car - so i'm new to these things

i'm born and bred in Georgia (USA), now live in Kentucky (USA) - so snow/ice are foreign to me. But they're a thing here in kentucky. We've had 3 snowfalls in 2 weeks (the most since i've been here 10+ years) - most of the time there's just 1 or 2 all season. and it's cleared pretty quickly - not like you're driving on it long

so - my dilemma - i have summer tires. I LOVE them . but not in snow/ice. This is my main car - i need something safer in all weather

should i let them swap out the tires and give me all-season...
or
... go buy a set of winters and some wheels and have max grip summer tires on 8-9 months and the winters on 3-4 months?

after loving the summer tires for 6 months, will i HATE all season?

let's be real - $4500 isn't cheap. BUT are people owning these cars really the best when it comes to making monetary decisions?

of course - another option is getting the all-seasons and simply swapping out tires on the same rims twice annually - but in another post i got the full explanation why that's not the best way to go.

so:

a) say BYE-BYE to summers, and run with All-seasons, um, all seasons of the year. Spend nothing

b) JUST GOT A CALL FROM MY SALES GUY - PORSCHE MAY BE WILLING TO PAY FOR THE WINTER TIRES.... so option B is now: Spend +/- $2500 on wheels for the winter tires and then swap them twice yearly....

sad update.... Porsche won't cover the non-standard winter tires. so

a) live with all seasons. period

b) [changed slightly] well, i guess now i can just buy a set of 21" wheels to put the summer tires on (or all season ones) and swap them out twice annually

c) pay porsche to swap the tires out twice annually and use same rims/wheels for both sets- they won't muck the rims up like Billy Joe Bob at the local tire store might...

When I read your original post, I thought you got a great deal that Porsche was going to pay for a second set of tires. I guess that was too good to be true.

If it were me, I'd go with B so I can do it at home and save time/trip. Also, I'd be concerned with taking a tire off from a rim repeatedly fearing they could stretch over time. Other thing is I don't agree that Porsche is better at swapping out tires than a custom rim/tire shop. The *key* is a custom shop.

Option 2, have them buy the all-seasons and keep the summer. Do you really think they can sell the summer tires to anyone? Let them know if they have a buyer before April, you will pay $100 more than the bona fide buyer....Otherwise, let you keep them for free and you will have both sets.

BTW, where do you see the documentation of what tire should have been on the vehicle? I don't see that anywhere on my build sheet or window sticker?

All-seasons are not better than summer in any condition. They offer in fact worse performance in warm weather (including rain) and are just as bad in winter(they are better than summers in the ice but they aren't really a good option at all)

If you get snow regularly and plan to drive, do yourself a favor and get dedicated winter tires with. Studded tires are not needed (may in fact be illegal where you are so do check).

My vote goes to separate wheels for winter tires.
I'd never risk a $150k car in snow with all seasons.
(And I never had all season even on much, much less expensive vehicles. After all, car parts are replaceable, human parts are not, remember )

As mentioned, studded tires are not needed unless you live in the arctic countryside. Even in Norway studless winter tires have about 90% share in the main cities. I can highly recommend the Hakkapeliitta R3 that is developed for nordic climate (read icy...). Winter tires is always a tradeoff between icy and wet conditions. If it's only very occasionally icy you might want to look at winter tires developed for continental Europe like the Pirelli or Goodyear offerings. But definitely get a dedicated winter set if there is any chance of prolonged winter conditions.

I say plan B. Buy a set of rims, let Porsche give you all weathers and keep the summer tires on your e-mission rims (if Porsche will let you keep them). You’ll only be using the all weather tires maybe 4 months a year.

My Taycan came with summer tires, and I bought another set of all weather tires and rims (used with 500 miles) which I use in the winter. The spare set cost $4000 delivered. So far, the all seasons are working fine since we also don’t get much snow but it does get cold.

The nice thing about a spare set of tires on rims is that it takes 15 minutes to swap them. And anyone can do it.

That is what I have done, and recommend, for years.
Why have a good car and compromise on the bit that touches the ground?

Being cheapskate on tyres is the stupidest place to be cheapskate.

Can anyone recommend any way to get a set of winter tires for 20 inch? I tried online almost every website and called all the local dealership around me and they are sold out everywhere. My Taycan has summer tire in CO so it's sitting in the garage since I took delivery in Dec. Only drive 20 miles in 2 months.

i'll DM you. i looked forever and stumbled upon ONE SET. they're' studded (i thin) so for severe winter weather... my dealer ended up putting all-weather on my car so i didn't pullthe trigger

sorry to sound glib but welcome to covid america, shortages abound and winter tires are one item that have become scarce.
