I brought my 2022 Taycan 4S into the shop and they gave me a J1.2 loaner.
One thing that stood out right away is the huge improvement in camera quality — it’s finally clear and actually usable, lol.
Has anyone here compared the camera hardware (size/specs) between J1.1 and J1.2? And does anyone know if this could be a plug-and-play retrofit for earlier cars?

Same cameras, different assistance ECU, which runs a newer software - which process the image differently, but definitely not a dramatic difference as you explain. You might not have the surround view/bird view cameras option.

It can be "retrofitted", as in, the dealer replaces the old ECU and the wiring and the cameras with the new one, as per TSB, if the cameras malfunction and go to black screen. So a warranty item, in case current cameras malfunction

Did that J1.2 had a surround view or just reverse? the reverse on the J1.2 is same or worse then the J1.1 from my experience.

By "surround view/bird view cameras option", do you mean the view where you can see your actual car in frame and allows you to spin it around?

So they will only "Upgrade" it in the event it malfunctions?

In the event of camera malfunctions, the TSB says that They will install the new version of the assistance control unit/ECU, which runs newer software (which processes the camera feed slightly different), the wire harness for the cameras, and the cameras themselves (which are the same cameras). It should not be a vast difference.

Likely the difference is so big in your example/experience, because the 2025 car had optioned the surround view camera, which offers some different views, and your's doesn't. In the event of malfunction of cameras, they will not give you this option, no - just replace what you have with newer hardware.

The camera part themselves, have the same code same version PAB980556 and seems unchaged - you can see compatibility for MY25 on suncoast, and you can also see it's being used in the panamera too, likely MY26 also, they just didn't release parts numbers and diagram yet.

Just speaking about reverse camera. Camera pixel quality is the same, but much less crazy fisheye wide angel image on J1.2, make it actually useable.

I also have surround view camera that shows video from different angles, kind of cool, used it once and never use again.

on my cars it looks exactly the same, on the one with the surround view there is a way to change the angle of the camera to be less or more wide, maybe your car that is in service has that mode on and the loaner doesn't.

This, i got the j1.2 module, slight improvement noted, but then again, I've been without a camera for so long awaiting for the appointment and fix, it feels like I was cured of my blindness. Taycan's camera rear angle is terrible, highly recommend getting the Park Assist just to get the rear cross traffic view

As with others, I didn't notice any improvement when going from 1.1 to 1.2 surround view.

Surround view is the same from 1.1 to 1.2.
How about backup view? I really believe the fish eye view is much better on 1.2.

Pretty sure I had that option on the 1.2 also.
