Mmm. I thought that might be the case!
Which year and model was it and what were the major problems?
I have decided against a plug in hybrid in favour of the more ’simple‘ diesel.

Complex cars will have problems. The ability of the manufacturer/importer/dealer to fix them is big factor. My local LR Service Centre is only 10 minutes away, mostly downhill. That’s one plus!

My first was only an Evoque but I had issues that every time we had freezing nights none of the doors would unlock and I had to climb in through the boot. It went back 5 times for that but they couldn't figure it out (even though they saw it happening so acknowledged the issue). I also had software issues and speakers needing replacing. My second was a Disco and that had similar issues with muffle speakers and a gearbox issue. I wouldn't touch JLR now which is ironic given the constant recalls and faults with the Taycan - because I'd still buy Porsche for some reason.

On those lines ….
- In December my Cayenne was in for a service. They found a nail in the tread of one tyre and an urgent advisory was a tyre replacement.
- I knew the tyre wasn’t losing air when I took in, so decided to take it to my local friendly tyre shop to check. The dealer tyre price quoted was £60 more than elsewhere and I know from past experience that they’re not allowed to price match.
- I had taken a fast 12v compressor just in case but the tyre still didn’t lose any air on the way to the tyre shop. When they removed and checked the tyre whatever was in the tread had fallen out. They pronounced the tyre ok. Fortunate because like the others it has 5mm+ tread remaining.
- I understand the dealer would be reluctant to remove whatever was in the tread in case the tyre then deflated. But had I ok’d the replacement, they ordered it in and they then found no puncture would they have backtracked?

- In the same service they advised my 6mm (50% worn) front pads should be replaced soon. They’re the originals and have done 40,000 miles (I mostly use the car for long motorway trips). On that basis the pads could be good for another 30,000 miles.

In November I backed out of a deal to replace my Taycan with an 8 month old j1.2 because on collection the bodywork condition wasn’t as described, they didn’t do the full SoH check I had requested and the 101 check data was incorrect, incomplete and so unreliable.

A couple more bad experiences in the last couple of months have caused a loss of faith in Porsche dealers, so I’ve switched tack and have decided to replace the Cayenne with a Range Rover Sport. I’ll keep the Taycan for now. I understand Range Rover doesn’t necessarily have a good reliability reputation and I may be going from frying pan to fire, but after a bumpy ride with Porsche a change is due and there’s no other design I like.

Based on my current Taycan and the one I backed out of, the rigour I’ve seen exhibited in the LR 165 check is in a different league to Porsche. The LR Approved warranty isn’t based solely upon whether the root cause of failure is a manufacturing defect, so that seems a safer bet if I keep the car after expiry of the manufacturer warranty. The RRS standard spec is much better than Cayenne, especially the Autobiography, so desirable cars are more plentiful, but I’ve not yet seen one at the right price in good enough condition. Dealer stock mostly seems to be uncared for ex-JLR cars.

Anyone out there able to compare Land Rover and Porsche experiences?

I have had a Macan and 2 Taycans. In a similar time my wife has had 2 LR discovery sports and now has a RR evoque PHEV autobiography.
They have all been nice cars, different in style. Mine have been pretty good and dealer is always helpful (Tewkesbury). No major issues, even with my current Taycan which is now 3 yrs old. Heater blew, replaced again on recall and the other well documented recalls, but so far, nothing has stopped it driving. Fingers crossed. Macan had a PDK oil leak, fixed under warranty.
The Land Rovers… first was terrible. Spent ages in the dealer with problems and bits falling off. Second was better with only a few things going wrong but probably worse than the Porsches. But major DPF issues requiring regular oil changes. Fatal flaw to the car I think. Current RR - some issues with the hybrid drive software. Really bad after 1 year, but somehow got sorted. Playing up again now, possibly due to an update and maybe the cold weather. Dealers can be helpful but unreliable with phoning back and need to be constantly hassled to do anything. Often say nothing is wrong initially when clearly there is a problem.
Overall, Porsche dealer is streets ahead and cars more reliable so far. But the RR is a nice car and my wife wouldn’t swap it!

I had a new 2021 RR Velar P450e plug-in. I had 7 visits to the dealer in 18 months. A new amplifier and the rest was software. Every time they ‘updated‘ the software it cured the current issue but the previous one then reappeared.

I know an owner of a new Velar diesel bought the same time, had a replacement new car due to the continuing issue of the belt failing and trashing the engine. The dealer told me that was a known issue but they continued to manufacture and sell cars with the defect.

2 things made my mind up to get rid at 20 months old - my insurer refused to insure any RR less than 5 years old and the dealer told me I had to book the service months in advance as they were overwhelmed with warranty works and the 2 nearest dealers had declared being ‘critical’ so weren’t taking any more warranty work.

Perhaps it has all changed in the last 3 years but I would ensure insurance is back to a normal level and your local dealer will fit in (my opinion) the inevitable visits.

The car was great but I also got fed up never being sure there wasn’t going to an ‘event’ every time I got in.

I’ve used Hull twice and found them v good, helpful and straight (in a minority). Just get them to do it all at the same price.
Or, get Halfords to change your Brake Fluid for £50 rather than the Porsche rip off £228.

Wouldn't touch Halfords after my MoT experience. I called them beforehand to check they can carry out MoTs on a Taycan - some won't due to weight/dimensions.

Dropped the car off on time, only to find out an hour later they couldn't do it. They need to jack the car up when it's on a ramp, and their secondary jack wasn't wide enough. From then on, they didn't want to know, and ended up blaming me for booking it with National Tyres who Halfords has just merged with (despite the booking saying they were Halfords...)

Lesson learnt. Don't try to save 30 miles by not taking it to the OPC. And steer clear of having anything done by Halfords.

How expensive depends on what’s included.

Asking them to verify that a brake fluid change (e.g. when was the brake lines recall done?) and drains check is absolutely necessary might get it down quite a bit.

Porsche hourly rate for labour is criminal (£150+ plus VAT) and soon mounts up.

As per the details I posted for Weissach UK 'YES' is the answer (PCCS update mentioned in the pricing) - check the website, contact them and seek assurance. Not all Indies are equal but worth exploring for routine items such as servicing. Software updates may be limited - I'm not sure.

Helpful posts so I’m gona add to this, reporting on my 4th year 2nd “major” service cost just done yesterday:

Bristol called quoted £1200, and when I told them 1st service in 2024 costed 570 they when straight down to 980.
Called Nottingham and they quote 950, not willing to budge any lower.
Called Leicester and they quoted 825, send over the quit via email.
Called Bristol again and asked for a price match which they said yes to @ 820

Collected the car from Bristol, invoiced me at £700 including MOT!! This “major” service included check drain, dust and pollen filter, 1l break fluid and winter window clean(huh??).

Comparing this to the 1st service done in nottingham, I don’t see what more they’ve done on the “major” service. But I’m not complaining since they shaved off £180 inc. MOT from the quoted price.

Nicely done! and great info ... The 'major' service is every 6 years when they replace pads - and possibly discs too.... :O

For us with PSCB/PCCB that's gonna hurt! ... that's when it could be worth investigating an accredited indie and potential impact on warranty/history etc....
