Hi everyone! I'm very excited about getting my Taycan later this week and was wondering if I could get some advice on an in-home charging setup and how often to charge, what % to charge to, etc.

Thus far I have not purchased any charging equipment and will initially only have the portable charger that comes with the car. I have a slightly unique garage setup and was hoping for some assistance.

A little info on my situation - This will be my first EV. I'm getting a 3 year old (2021) base model Taycan and the car will be my daily driver. I will likely drive around 30-40 miles per day M-Th, less on the weekends. I have a 3-car garage and this car will be parked in the middle spot with a car on either side (for the safety of the Taycan, moving wife/daughter's cars is not a good option). Unfortunately, that means I'll need to install the charger on a wall, then run the cable up a wall, over a car, and drop down to my Taycan. That also means I'll likely need an extension cord since it will be more than 14 feet to go up the wall to the ceiling, over a car, and back down. My electrician will install a 240V 100 amp breaker to run either direct to the charger or to a wall plug. I'm told that will get me up to 19.2kWh with the Porsche Wall charger if thats the best option.

Based on that I have a few questions

1. Should I get the Porsche Wall charger, a standard Level 2 charger, or just use the portable charger? If non Porsche level 2, any recommendations?
2. Any recommendations on the EV charging extension cable? Is having the extension cable going to significantly reduce the charging speed? I've seen multiple different amp ratings on the extension cords (32 up to 48), will that make a difference?
3. Based on some threads I've read, it looks like the consensus is to not charge above 80% on a regular basis, unless going on an extended trip, in order to extend the life of the battery. Do you agree? Also, should I charge nightly, or only as needed? Goal here is to extend the battery life as long as possible as I plan on keeping this car for 5+ years.
4. I've read a bit about CCS. Can you confirm that's only on high speed chargers and having that in-home is not an option? Also, would using CCS frequently decrease the life of the battery?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Why not just have the charger installed on the wall directly in front of the Taycan? Right now you can’t use the Porsche charger due to the recall. I would recommend either a dumb charger Grizzle E or if you want a smart charger the charge point is good as well. Don’t charge above 85% unless you need it. I used to charge whenever I hit 50% but now I just plug it in every night due to the timers I have set. Hope you enjoy your ownership.

I have a similar set up in a 3 car garage. I would recommend the Chargepoint HomeFlex ($550 on Amazon). It has a 23 ft cord and much better quality than the Porsche offering that comes with your car. Cable doesn't overheat and charger hasn't broken yet unlike the Porsche one. If you can mount in the middle as Caraholic suggests, that would work. Given the 23 ft length, you will probably be fine even mounting in front of bay 1 or 3 in your garage and won't need an extension cable.

I would buy the Tesla wall charger as they are the least expensive I’ve seen and work perfectly. I had a Model S before my Taycan and have used my Tesla wall charger (with adapter) for a couple of years now with zero issues.

As for mounting it, consult a qualified electrician. he will answer the rest of your questions.

Another vote for mounting the charger on the wall the cars are facing. If you do it that way, you should be able to easily reach either charging port.

I have ClipperCreek/Enphase chargers, and when I ordered my second one about a month ago, they were having a half price sale. Not sure if that's still on.

Porsche bought me a new Grizzl-E dumb charger to replace the even dumber charger that came with the car. To my surprise it arrived with a 25 foot cable. Could come in handy. With the Grizzl-E, I charge at 8.8 kW which takes me back to full (80%) in one to two hours based on my daily commute, which appears similar to yours. Enjoy your new addiction!

I went through the same logic first, which is, long copper to the front wall from the panel, but ended up with this setup using Emporia EVSE 48Amp direct wire with 24ft cable. I installed the EVSE right next to the Power Panel which resulted in the shortest copper wire and cleanest look with that copper wire going behind the wall. Then Taycan is in the second spot with 24 ft cable reaching the port with some slack still left. You have to manage to charge when the car in the 1st slot is not there or not going anywhere but that has not been an issue. Also, after reading about what is best for the battery I try to keep it close to 50% +/-10% by the end of the day by charging in between daily trips if needed and get it up to 75%-85% before ready to drive in the morning using Timer function.

Sounds like you have 19.2 kw optioned and you can afford 100A circuit in your garage. That means you need 100A/80A charger that best leverages your setup. I recently went through this and installed PWCC. Super happy with it. The built-in cord is 15 feet so it may already be enough for your situation.

I did this.......................similar set up to yours - Taycan is in the middle garage bay. I am fortunate - main electric panels are on the wall in the right hand bay. Electrician ran line (6 gauge is what you will need) from the electric panel inside wall, up into attic, continued down inside of wall and installed Hubbell 14-50 wall socket (about $90 on Amazon) right in front of the Taycan. I used the Porsche unit and then when Porsche offered to reimburse for third party charger I ordered the ChargePoint Flex (comes with 25 ft cord). It couldn't be any easier - at least for me.

You mention an 'extension cord'. I'm not sure where you intend to use this but from what I have read extension cords are not really a dood idea/fit for a wall charger. At least I would not do this..........................

Porsche EVSEs are just fine (outside of US only apparently) and now they have an updated range to consider - I wouldn't discount so take a look at their website particularly if they are price neutral. Interestingly, MY25 cars onward the EVSE is at additional cost (launch to MY24 the EVSE was supplied with the car).

I use the Porsche PMCC (22 kW / AC) at home with the 25m cable - perfect and not missed a beat in 3+ years.

AC is the 99.99% standard solution for home charging (unless you have very deep pockets - $$,$$$) - and is all that is needed to be honest given most / all of your charging will be done overnight.

War and Peace has been written on this forum re charging - review that and also consult the My Porsche App owners manual.

85% daily charging is fine, 100% fine if using the car that day, regular ultra rapid charging (150kW+) generates more heat and therefore will degrade battery sooner. Remember that the headline power delivery from a DC EVSE may not match what you actually draw when charging (dependent on many variables: current battery State of Charge (< 50% to get > 150kW in my experience), ambient temperature (high is good), battery temp (32C is ideal), local infrastructure power supply and so on. So if you use a 350kW EVSE where the max in ideal conditions you could hope for would be 270kW (for a short period) may only deliver 125kW max during your session so therefore temper all "recommendations" with what you end up charging at. AC charging - don't sweat at all - max you'll get will be 22kW.

I have the same car bought new which came with the Porche wall mounted charger using a 50 amp dryer plug I had installed. FIRST: there was a recall on the charger do to over heating when charging a full use, and I was given up to $600 to purchase a new charge, which I did. I bought the Juice Box (works great) Also the wire is very long, check it out. May not to run wire overhead from 50 amp line. As for charging, if you intend to keep the car for a long time then 80% is good, but being that I don't keep cars that long I just let it charge to 100%. But, I put very few miles on my Taycan. Hope this helps.

My only additional suggestion caution is to not use an extension cord.....It will add resistance/cable heating and is definitely not permitted by Porsche
